Diego Garcia is part of the Chagos Islands in the Indian Ocean, which has been occupied by Britain for 210 years.

US President Donald Trump has expressed displeasure with Britain over Diego Garcia Island located in the Indian Ocean. He said on Truth Social on Tuesday that Britain is planning to give this island to Mauritius, whereas America has a very important military base here. Giving away this island without any reason is shocking and a wrong decision.

Trump said that-

Surprisingly, our wonderful NATO ally Britain is currently planning to hand over Diego Garcia Island to Mauritius. That too without any reason. There is no doubt that China and Russia have sensed this grave weakness.

He further wrote that these countries understand only strength and that is why under their leadership America has received more respect in a year than ever before.

Trump said that handing over such an important area is very foolish. This decision is one of several national security issues that make it necessary for the US to acquire Greenland.

Britain got Chagos Island after Napoleon’s defeat.

The Diego Garcia Island that Trump is talking about is actually a part of the Chagos Islands. The Chagos Islands are a group of islands in the Indian Ocean. It is located about 9,334 kilometers south-east of Britain and about 2,012 kilometers north-east of Mauritius.

After the defeat of Napoleon in 1814, Chagos Island and Mauritius came under the control of Britain under the Treaty of Paris. In 1965, these islands were made ‘British Indian Ocean Territory’ and separated from Mauritius.

Mauritius got independence in 1968. At that time it was decided that when these islands would no longer be necessary for the defense of Britain, then they would be returned to Mauritius. A joint military base of Britain and America was built on the largest island, Diego Garcia. The people living there were resettled in Mauritius and Seychelles and some were brought to Britain in 2002.

Mauritius has been demanding rights to these islands for 50 years

Mauritius has been demanding its rights over these islands since the 1980s and has raised the issue in international courts. In 2019, the International Court of Justice said in a decision that at the time of granting independence to Mauritius in 1968, the process of decolonization was not completed and Britain should end the administration of the Chagos Islands as soon as possible.

The Conservative government led by Rishi Sunak announced in 2022 that Britain and Mauritius will start talks on the sovereignty of the Chagos Islands.

The government said that in view of the constant threat of legal challenges, it is necessary to clarify the legal situation for the security of Britain. The government said that with this, the military bases of Britain and America on Diego Garcia will continue to function properly. The Conservative government held 11 rounds of talks with Mauritius ahead of general elections in July 2024.

Britain and Mauritius signed agreement in 2024

After British PM Keir Starmer’s Labor Party came to power, on October 3, 2024, both the countries issued a joint statement and said that a political agreement had been reached. Keir Starmer and Mauritius Prime Minister Naveen Ramgoolam signed the treaty on 22 May 2025.

Starmer said that if Mauritius had taken legal action, Britain would have had no concrete chance of winning and that an interim order could have come within weeks. He also said that without an agreement, Britain would not have the legal basis to prevent China or other countries from carrying out military activity on Chagos Island.

On this agreement, America said that after investigation of all the departments, it has been decided that this agreement will help in running the joint military base of America and Britain in Diego Garcia safely and properly for a long time.

During a meeting with the British Prime Minister in February 2025, Trump said that he was in favor of moving forward with this agreement and that he thought it would work well.

Diego Garcia will remain with Britain on a 99-year lease.

However, the opposition Conservative Party, led by Kemi Badenoch, criticized the agreement and called it a surrender. He said that Britain is handing over its territory and is paying more than 30 billion pounds (Rs 3.49 lakh crore) for it.

Opposition leader James Cartwright said his government would not make such a deal because they were against paying billions of pounds to rent back their own land.

Under this agreement, Mauritius will get sovereignty of the islands, but Britain will keep Diego Garcia on a 99-year lease, with the option to extend it further. Britain will pay for this.

An average of 101 million pounds (Rs 1173 crore) is estimated to be spent every year in the first 99 years. The total expenditure is said to be around 3.4 billion pounds (40 thousand crore rupees), although some people believe that it could be more than this.

Under the agreement between Mauritius and Britain, Diego Garcia will be on lease from Britain for 99 years.

Chagos Island is important for India in changing geopolitics

The importance of Mauritius and Chagos Islands for India is rapidly increasing amidst the rapidly changing geopolitical situation. India had welcomed the agreement signed between Britain and Mauritius on 23 May 2025, under which sovereignty of the Chagos Islands is being given to Mauritius.

Over the last 10 years, the Government of India has created a separate division for the Indian Ocean region in the Ministry of External Affairs and the Ministry of Defence, called the Indian Ocean Region Division. This division now includes Mauritius, Seychelles, Madagascar, Comoros, Reunion Island of France, Sri Lanka and the Maldives. This makes it clear that India considers this area very important.

  • Chagos Island is in the middle of the Indian Ocean, hence it is considered very important for the security of India’s sea routes and trade.
  • There is a military base of America and Britain on Diego Garcia Island, which keeps an eye on the entire Indian Ocean and also benefits India’s maritime security.
  • The American army present here works to put a stop to China’s increasing activities in the Indian Ocean, which is beneficial for India.
  • The surveillance and intelligence information received from this area helps India to better understand the activities taking place in the sea.
  • Maintaining peace and stability in the Indian Ocean is very important for India’s Indo-Pacific policy and SAGAR vision.

China is rapidly increasing its presence in this area

In the last 10 to 15 years, China has rapidly increased its economic and military presence in the Indian Ocean region. China has sent warships, participated in maritime security operations and gained access to several important naval bases. It has invested in dozens of ports across the region, many of which can also accommodate military ships.

According to Bloomberg’s 2025 report, this growing power of China is a cause of concern for India. India has built an airstrip on Agalega Island in Mauritius, so that Chinese activities can be monitored by flying reconnaissance aircraft from there.

The Indian Ocean extends from the Horn of Africa to South-East Asia. About 3 billion people live in this region and about 40% of the world’s marine oil passes through this route. Many of the world’s most important maritime trade routes lie in this ocean, connecting Europe, Asia, Africa and the Middle East.

India has built the necessary infrastructure for a military base on North Agalega Island in Mauritius, 3,729 km from Mumbai.

India, China and America are increasing their influence in Mauritius.

Mauritius is an economically strong and democratic country, with a vast maritime area. India, China and America are all trying to increase their influence here.

India has built big projects like metro line, Supreme Court and hospital in Mauritius. At the same time, China has done many constructions like airport terminal, dam, sports complex and cruise terminal. Mauritius also became the first African country to sign a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) with China.

The Foreign Minister of Mauritius had said in 2025 that the current situation is beneficial for his country, because now no big power can ignore small countries. He said that Mauritius is not limited to any one country and is open to relations with all.
