Copyright controversy has gained momentum in Bollywood. Eros International Media Limited filed a complaint against filmmaker Anand L. in the Bombay High Court. A case has been filed against Rai and his production company Color Yellow Media Entertainment LLP. According to a report published in Times of India, Eros alleges that Aanand Rai’s new film ‘Tere Ishq Mein’ (2025) was deliberately promoted as a ‘spiritual sequel’ of the 2013 hit film ‘Raanjhanaa’, thereby taking illegal advantage of their goodwill. The company is demanding compensation of ₹84 crore. The case is based on a commercial IP suit and interim application alleging trademark infringement, copyright infringement and passing off. Eros’ lawyers say that the story, characters and themes of ‘Raanjhanaa’ have been copied from ‘Tere Ishq Mein’. ‘Raanjhanaa’ was mentioned repeatedly in the film’s promo, trailer and marketing, without any permission. Eros claims that ‘Raanjhanaa’ had earned more than Rs 100 crore and is their major asset. ‘Raanjhanaa’ Anand L. The film was directed by Rai, in which Dhanush, Sonam Kapoor and Abhay Deol were in the lead roles. It was a romantic drama set in Banaras, based on the story of unrequited love. It was produced and distributed by Eros. Whereas, ‘Tere Ishq Mein’ is produced by Aanand Rai’s banner Color Yellow Media Entertainment LLP. According to the petition filed in the court, Aanand Rai used the trademarked title, tagline and visual elements of ‘Raanjhanaa’. For example, the promotional material featured ‘Raanjhanaa’-like locations, musical style and emotional tone. Eros has presented posters, teasers and interview clips as evidence. The CEO of Eros has said in his statement that it is our right to protect our property. This is clear theft. However, no official response has come from Anand Rai’s side in this matter yet. The court has fixed the next hearing on January 20.
