They were brought to Iran from the Iraqi states of Maysan and Wasit near the southern border. A European military source has also confirmed that about 800 Shia fighters arrived in Iran from Diyala, Maysan and Basra provinces. An expert said that taking the help of foreign militant groups to suppress the demonstrations is a deliberate strategy of Khamenei, so that any sympathy does not develop between the protesters and foreign fighters, so that strict measures can be taken. These include Kata’ib Hezbollah, Harakat Hezbollah, al-Nujaba, Kata’ib Sayyid al-Shuhada and Badr Organization. All these armed groups operate under the umbrella organization Popular Mobilization Forces of Iraq, which is considered a government-backed paramilitary force in Iraq. They have been raised by Iran’s Revolutionary Guard by providing them training, weapons and money. Therefore, their real loyalty is more with the Iranian regime than the Iraqi government. Fighters came in 60 buses on the pretext of religious pilgrimage. Ali D., an official attached to the Iraqi Interior Ministry, had told news agency Media Lane about the increasing movement on the Iran-Iraq border. According to Ali, on January 11, more than 60 Shia pilgrims left for Iran in 50-seater buses. Ali told that there were only men in the buses, no families and no elderly people. Everyone was wearing the same black T-shirt. According to CNN, by the day these buses reached Iran, anti-government protests had spread to all 31 states of Iran. According to Iranian opposition leader Mehdi Reza, Iraqi militants were deployed in front of government buildings and military headquarters.
