Trump has talked about occupying Greenland many times. He cited national security as the reason behind the occupation of Greenland.
US President Donald Trump has openly threatened to include Greenland in America. According to BBC, Trump said that if any country did not support him in his plan to occupy Greenland, he would impose tariffs on those countries.
Trump made this statement during a meeting at the White House on Friday. However, Trump did not clarify on which countries the tariff would be imposed and what legal authority he would use for this.
Trump said that America is also talking to NATO regarding Greenland. Trump has already said that NATO should support America. If America does not control Greenland, then Russia or China can increase their influence there, which will not be accepted under any circumstances.

Trump has also described Greenland as important for a big defense project called Golden Dome. Golden Dome is America’s missile defense project. This project is inspired by Israel’s Iron Dome. The purpose of the Golden Dome is to protect America from threats coming from countries like China and Russia.
US Parliament team reached Greenland
At the time of Trump’s statement, a bipartisan delegation of the US Congress was visiting Greenland. This 11-member team is led by Democrat Senator Chris Coons. It also includes Republican senators Thom Tillis and Lisa Murkowski.
The delegation met Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen and Greenland Prime Minister Jens-Fredrik Nielsen in addition to Greenlandic parliamentarians.
The purpose of the team is to listen to local people and reduce tension in Washington. Senator Coons said, ‘We are listening to the people of Greenland and will go back with their opinion, so that the situation can calm down.’
Greenland MP Aja Chemnitz said, ‘We need friends and allies. America has been putting pressure since 2019. This is a long race, which is not over yet. The more support we get, the better.” He expressed hope that this meeting would prove beneficial.

American lawmakers divided into two groups regarding Greenland
US Senator Murkowski has introduced a bill in Parliament against forcibly taking Greenland. At the same time, a Republican MP introduced another bill in favor of adding Greenland.
Trump’s special envoy Jeff Landry told Fox News that the US should talk directly to Greenland’s leaders, not Denmark. He said, ‘Trump is serious. The deal will be done soon.
On Wednesday, Denmark’s Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen and Greenland’s Foreign Minister Vivian Motzfeldt met Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio at the White House.
A Danish official told the BBC that there was no talk of military action, but that Trump’s statements were being taken seriously.

US lawmaker Congressman Randy Fine introduced the ‘Greenland Annexation and Statehood Bill’ on January 12, which is yet to be passed in both the House and Senate.
Working group will be formed to discuss Greenland
No major agreement was reached between Denmark, Greenland and America in the talks held at the White House on Wednesday. However, after the meeting the three parties agreed to form a joint working group to discuss issues related to Greenland, which will meet in the coming weeks.
Rasmussen clearly said that disagreements remain with America. Our stance is quite different. He described Trump’s idea of buying or annexing Greenland as completely unacceptable. ‘We have said very clearly that this is not in Denmark’s interests,’ he said.
He also said the two countries were ready to expand security cooperation in the Arctic, including the possibility of building more US military bases in Greenland.
European countries came in support of Denmark, sending troops
European countries have taken steps in support of Denmark. France, Germany, Sweden, Norway, Finland, the Netherlands and Britain are sending limited numbers of troops to Greenland as part of a monitoring mission.
The German Foreign Ministry said it would send a team of 13 people to support Denmark in ensuring security in the region.
At the same time, Sweden’s Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson said on Wednesday that at the behest of Denmark, several officers of the Swedish Armed Forces have been sent to Greenland to participate in a military exercise.

Trump cited the presence of Russian and Chinese ships in the area as the reason behind occupying Greenland.
Trump said – No treaty or lease, complete control over Greenland is needed
Trump says Greenland is vital to US national security due to the presence of Russian and Chinese ships. He told The New York Times that mere treaty or lease will not suffice, but complete control is required. This will provide more facilities.
White House spokeswoman Caroline Levitt said on Tuesday that her team is exploring various ways to take control of Greenland, including the use of military force.
US Vice President JD Vance has also warned that America ‘will have to do something’ if Greenland’s security is not taken seriously.
Why is Greenland so special…

- Special geographical location: The geographical position of Greenland is very special. It is located between North America and Europe, i.e. near the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. For this reason it is considered a very important destination in the Mid-Atlantic region.
- Strategic Military Importance: Greenland is very important for military and missile surveillance between Europe and Russia. America already has Thule Air Base here, which is necessary for missile warning and monitoring Russian/Chinese activities.
- Keep an eye on China and Russia: The activities of Russia and China are increasing in the Arctic region. Due to its influence on Greenland, America wants to strengthen its geopolitical hold in this area.
- Natural Resources: Greenland is believed to have large reserves of rare minerals, oil, gas and rare earth elements, which are of great economic and technological importance in the future. China controls 70-90% of their production, so America wants to reduce its dependence.
- New maritime trade routes: Due to global warming, Arctic ice is melting, opening up new shipping routes. Control of Greenland will help the US dominate these routes and stop Russia-China advance in the Arctic region.
- US Security Policy: The US considers Greenland the “front line” of its national security. By increasing its influence there, it wants to prevent possible future threats in advance.
