US President Trump has talked about taking control of Greenland several times since 2019.
Denmark has adopted a tough stance amid US President Donald Trump’s threat to occupy Greenland. The Danish Defense Ministry has clarified that if a foreign force attacks Danish territory, troops will immediately respond and open fire without waiting for orders from the commander.
This rule dates back to 1952, which dates back to the Cold War, and is still applicable today. This directive was created after Nazi Germany’s attack on Denmark in April 1940, to give troops the freedom to react quickly.
Joint Arctic Command, Denmark’s military unit in Greenland, will decide whether any action constitutes an attack. This statement has come at a time when Trump is repeatedly demanding control over Greenland. They are also threatening to send troops if needed.
American media The New York Times (NYT) quoted experts as saying that to control Greenland, America does not need to buy it or forcibly occupy it.

Report- America has got a lot of freedom in Greenland due to the defense agreement.
The US already has considerable leeway in Greenland under an old defense agreement dating back to 1951. This agreement was made between America and Denmark.
Mikael Runge Olesen, a researcher at the Copenhagen-based Danish Institute for International Studies, told the NYT that the US has so much freedom in Greenland that it can do almost whatever it wants there.
“If America talks nicely, it can get almost everything,” he said. But buying Greenland is a completely different matter, because the people of Greenland are against it being sold. Denmark does not have the right to sell it.
In earlier times, decisions related to Greenland were taken only by Denmark. Now the situation has changed, as the people of Greenland have the right to hold a referendum on independence and Danish officials have said the decision is left up to the island’s 57,000 residents.

In a survey last year, 85 percent people opposed the American occupation. Greenland’s Prime Minister Jens-Fredrik Nielsen has repeatedly said that “our country is not for sale.”
A minor defense agreement of 1951 was updated in 2004 to include Greenland’s semi-autonomous government, so that US military activities do not affect the local people.
The agreement originated during World War II, when Denmark was under Nazi occupation and its Washington envoy negotiated a defense agreement with the United States for Greenland. They feared that the Nazis could use Greenland to attack America.
At that time American troops established several bases on the island and expelled the Germans. After the war, America kept some bases, but closed most of them when the Cold War ended. Now America is left with only the Pitufic Space Base, which does missile tracking.
Denmark also has a small presence there, such as special forces with dog sleds. Recently Denmark has promised to upgrade its base.

Trump said – No treaty or lease, complete control over Greenland is needed
Trump says Greenland is vital to US national security due to the presence of Russian and Chinese ships. He told The New York Times that mere treaty or lease will not suffice, but complete control is required. This will provide more facilities.
White House spokeswoman Caroline Levitt said on Tuesday that her team is exploring various ways to take control of Greenland, including the use of military force.
US Vice President JD Vance has also warned that America ‘will have to do something’ if Greenland’s security is not taken seriously.

Danish PM said – If Greenland is attacked, everything will end.
Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen has warned that if the US launches a military attack on a NATO ally, it would lead to the end of NATO and the post-World War II security arrangement.
He said that in such a situation everything will stop. European countries have also expressed strong objection to Trump’s statement. The leaders of Britain, France, Germany, Italy, Poland, Spain and Denmark issued a joint statement saying that Greenland belongs to its people and only Denmark and Greenland can decide its future.

Greenland does not have its own army, but soldiers from America and Denmark are deployed
Greenland has no army of its own. Denmark is responsible for its defense and foreign policy. It is an autonomous region of Denmark. The population here is only 57 thousand.
After 2009, the Greenland government has gained leeway in coastal security and some foreign affairs, but the main matters of defense and foreign policy still lie with Denmark.
American soldiers: America’s Pitufik Space Base (Thule Air Base). This base located in the northwest of Greenland is run by the US. This base is used for missile warning system and space monitoring. According to NYT, about 150 to 200 American soldiers are deployed here. These missiles are for warning, space surveillance and Arctic security. This is America’s northernmost military base.
Danish soldier: Denmark’s Joint Arctic Command operates in Greenland. According to media reports, there are a total of about 150 to 200 Danish military and civilian personnel here. Which provide surveillance, search and rescue, and protect sovereignty. This also includes the famous Serious Dog Sled Patrol (a small elite unit, about 12-14 people), which conducts long patrols by dog sled.
Greenland ambassadors meet with US officials
Meanwhile, ambassadors from Denmark and Greenland met with US officials in Washington to persuade US lawmakers and the Trump administration to back off from the Greenland plan.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio is scheduled to meet with Danish officials next week. European leaders have united in support of Denmark and are saying that Greenland belongs to its people and it will be decided only by Denmark and Greenland. This dispute is deepening due to the increasing strategic importance of the Arctic region.
Know what benefit America can get from Greenland

Special geographical location: The geographical position of Greenland is very special. It is located between North America and Europe, i.e. near the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. For this reason it is considered a very important destination in the Mid-Atlantic region.
Strategic Military Importance: Greenland is very important for military and missile surveillance between Europe and Russia. America already has Thule Air Base here, which is necessary for missile warning and monitoring Russian/Chinese activities.
Keep an eye on China and Russia: The activities of Russia and China are increasing in the Arctic region. Due to its influence on Greenland, America wants to strengthen its geopolitical hold in this area.
Natural Resources: Greenland is believed to have large reserves of rare minerals, oil, gas and rare earth elements, which are of great economic and technological importance in the future. China controls 70-90% of their production, so America wants to reduce its dependence.
New maritime trade routes: Due to global warming, Arctic ice is melting, opening up new shipping routes. Control of Greenland will help the US dominate these routes and stop Russia-China advance in the Arctic region.
US Security Policy: The US considers Greenland the “front line” of its national security. By increasing its influence there, it wants to prevent possible future threats in advance.
Germany used to attack enemies from Greenland
During the Second World War, the fighter and surveillance planes of that era could not fly very far. Planes flying from the coasts of Europe and North America could not reach a large part of the Atlantic Ocean. This area was called ‘Greenland Air Gap’.
This air gap meant that this part of the sea remained almost free from aerial surveillance. Neither the planes of the Allied countries could patrol there nor the activities of the enemy could be monitored.
Germany took advantage of this weakness. His submarines, which were called U-boats. She used to move secretly in this area. They used to suddenly attack Allied ships carrying goods, weapons and soldiers between America and Europe.
There was no air defense from above, so it became difficult to save these ships. Because of this, this area became very dangerous for the Allied countries and it even came to be called the “killing ground” of ships.
As airports and military bases were built in Greenland and surrounding areas during the war, this air gap was closed. This provided the Allies with aerial surveillance and security over the entire Atlantic.
Eight decades after the Second World War, Greenland has become important. If there is a major war in the future, the country that controls Greenland can also control the Atlantic sea routes.
