The Ranchi district administration on Thursday ordered the closure of all schools till January 10 following a cold wave warning issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD), an official said.

The order applies to all categories of schools operating in the district. As per the directive, classes from KG to Class 12 in government, non-government, aided, non-aided and all private schools under Ranchi district will remain closed till January 10.

“All classes from KG to Class 12 in all government, non-government, aided, non-aided and all private schools operating under Ranchi district will remain closed till January 10,” the order said.

The administration said the decision was taken keeping in mind the health and safety of students amid the prevailing cold conditions. Earlier, schools in the district had been ordered to remain closed till January 8, which has now been extended.

The IMD has issued a yellow alert for cold wave conditions in 13 districts of Jharkhand, including Ranchi, till 8.30 am on Friday. Other districts likely to be affected include Garhwa, Palamu, Chatra, Hazaribagh, Latehar, To LohardaRamgarh, Bokaro, Gumla, Khunthi, Simdega and West Singhbhum.

Explaining the weather situation, Abhishek Anand, deputy director at the Ranchi Meteorological Centre, said, “The cold situation is triggered by the north-westerly wind in the lower tropospheric level over Jharkhand. The minimum temperature is likely to remain unchanged for the next two days and thereafter it may rise by up to 3 degrees Celsius during the following three days.”

Several parts of the state continued to reel under severe cold. Hazaribagh recorded the lowest minimum temperature in Jharkhand at 2.9 degrees Celsius, while Khunthi, Daltonganj and To Loharda registered minimum temperatures of 3.2 degrees Celsius, 3.4 degrees Celsius and 3.6 degrees Celsius, respectively.

Jharkhand’s capital Ranchi recorded a minimum temperature of 8 degrees Celsius, while Bokaro and It was a job registered 6.4 degrees Celsius and 6.5 degrees Celsius respectively.

Anand further said that a cold wave alert has also been issued for nine districts, Garhwa, Plum, Chatra, Latehar, Hazaribagh, To LohardaRamgarh, Bokaro and Gumlafrom 8.30 am on Friday till the same time the next day.
