This video of Iranian policeman being shot is viral on social media.

A policeman was shot dead on Wednesday amid nationwide protests over the economic crisis in Iran. This incident took place in Sistan and Baluchistan, the south-eastern province of Iran.

In the video, an unidentified assailant leans out of a moving vehicle and fires continuously. Only the tip of the gun is visible in the video. After being hit by bullets, the police car goes off the road and crashes. The slain police officer has been identified as Mahmood Haqiqat.

This is the second policeman killed in Iran in the last two days. Earlier on Tuesday, a police officer named Ehsan Aghajani was shot dead in Ilam province of western Iran. He was injured during clashes in Malekshahi area and later died in hospital.

Protests continue against rising inflation in Iran

There have been intense protests against the government in Iran since last month. This is considered to be the biggest movement against the government in the last three years. The protests began when shoppers in Tehran’s historic Grand Bazaar closed shops in protest against the falling currency (riyal).

After this this movement spread throughout the country. People took to the streets to protest economic distress, government mismanagement, Western sanctions, and restrictions on political and social freedoms.

US President Donald Trump has supported the protesters, saying that the US will stand with them if Iranian security forces kill them. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has also supported the protesters.

However, Iran’s Chief Justice Golamhossein Mohsani Ajai has warned that there will be no leniency against those who help the enemies of the Islamic Republic.

Iran’s economy depends on oil export

Iran’s total exports in 2024 were about $22.18 billion, of which oil and petrochemicals accounted for the major share, while imports stood at $34.65 billion, leading to a trade deficit of $12.47 billion.

This deficit is expected to increase further to $15 billion in 2025 due to reduction in oil exports and restrictions. Main trading partners include China (35% of exports), Türkiye, UAE and Iraq. Iran exports 90% of its oil to China.

Iran has sought to increase trade with neighboring countries and the Eurasian Economic Union, such as through the INSTC corridor and new transit routes with China. Yet, GDP growth is projected to be only 0.3% in 2025. Without the lifting of sanctions or the restoration of the nuclear deal, it will be difficult to stabilize trade and the value of the riyal.

Demand to hand over power to the Crown Prince

After 47 years, people angry with the current economic crisis and strict religious rule now want change.

For this reason, demands are being raised to hand over power to 65-year-old Crown Prince Reza Pahlavi. Protesters consider him a secular and democratic alternative.

Youth and Gen Z feel that Pahlavi’s return can bring economic stability, global acceptance and personal freedom to Iran.

Biggest performance in three years

These demonstrations are considered to be the biggest after 2022. Protests broke out across the country after the death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini in police custody. She was caught by the morality police for not wearing hijab properly.

Earlier on Monday, when the situation got out of control in some areas of Tehran, the police used tear gas to remove the protesters. The protesters also raised slogans against the government.
