German Chancellor Friedrich Merz will pay a two-day visit to India next week to strengthen bilateral cooperation in key areas such as trade, investment, defence and security, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said on Monday.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will receive the German leader in Ahmedabad on January 12, marking Merz’s first official visit to India as chancellor. During the visit, Merz will also travel to Bengaluru.

According to the MEA, the talks will review progress in the India-Germany Strategic Partnership, which completed 25 years last year. The two leaders are expected to discuss ways to further deepen cooperation in trade and investment, technology, education, skilling and mobility.

The discussions will also focus on expanding collaboration in defence and security, science, innovation and research, green and sustainable development, and people-to-people ties.

Prime Minister Modi and Chancellor Merz will also meet business and industry leaders during the visit. They are expected to exchange views on key regional and global issues of mutual interest.

“The visit will build on the momentum generated by regular interactions at the highest political level,” the MEA said.

The ministry further added that the talks would provide an “opportunity to reaffirm the shared vision of India and Germany to build a forward-looking partnership for the benefit of the people of both countries and the wider global community.”
