Family Loses 25-Day-Old Baby To Quilt Suffocation. Are You Making The Same Mistake?

A severe cold spell led to a heartbreaking tragedy in Mirzamurad area of Uttar Pradesh’s Varanasi district, where a 25-day-old infant died reportedly due to suffocation inside a quilt on Friday morning.

According to family members, the child’s mother had fed the baby during the night and, owing to the biting cold, wrapped herself and the newborn inside a thick quilt before going to sleep. When she woke up in the morning, the baby was unresponsive. The family immediately rushed the infant to a private hospital in Mohansarai, where doctors declared the child dead.

The incident has plunged Benipur village into grief. Rahul Kumar, a resident of the village, had married Sudha Devi two years ago. The birth of their first child just 25 days earlier had brought great joy to the family. “Everyone was very happy when the baby was born. We never imagined such a thing could happen,” the grieving father said. The last rites of the infant will be performed on the banks of the Ganga as per Hindu customs.

Health experts caution that covering newborns completely with quilts or thick blankets can be extremely dangerous, as it may obstruct breathing. They advise that infants should never be placed under heavy quilts, as they are too small to remove the covering if they begin to suffocate. It is important, they say, to ensure a baby’s face remains uncovered so they can breathe freely, especially during winter months when families rely on heavy bedding to stay warm.
