Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO) on Friday successfully test-fired Agni missile from Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam Missile Test Center in Odisha. DRDO gave this information on Saturday.
Multiple Independently Targeted Re-Entry Vehicle (MIRV) system has been installed in this missile, through which multiple nuclear weapons can be carried simultaneously. as well as at once
Multiple targets can be targeted. During the test, the missile successfully hit many targets located at different places. All these targets were spread in the Indian Ocean region.
According to media reports, this is India’s second Intercontinental Ballistic Missile (ICBM). Its range is approximately 5 thousand to 7 thousand kilometers. Its speed is so high that it is almost impossible for the enemy radar and missile defense system to stop it.

Defense Minister Rajnath Singh gave the information by posting on social media.
Agni-5 first intercontinental ballistic missile
India has Agni-1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 missiles in the Agni series. Agni-5 was India’s first intercontinental ballistic missile, built by DRDO. This is one of the long range missiles available with India. ICBMs are missiles that can attack from one continent to another.
- The range of this missile is 5 thousand kilometers. Agni-5 ballistic missile is capable of carrying multiple warheads simultaneously.
- It is equipped with Multiple Independently Targetable Reentry Vehicle (MIRV). That means it can be launched for multiple targets simultaneously.
- This missile can carry up to one and a half tonne nuclear weapons. Its speed is Mach 24, i.e. 24 times more than the speed of sound.
- Canister technology has been used in the launching system of Agni-5. Because of this, this missile can be easily transported anywhere.
- Agni-5 missile is also very easy to use, hence it can be deployed anywhere in the country.

Five countries of the world – America, Russia, China, India, France and Britain – have the technology of Intercontinental Ballistic Missile (ICBM).

Agni-5 can carry more than one warhead
Agni-5 is an advanced MIRV missile. MIRV stands for Multiple Independently-Targetable Re-Entry Vehicle. Traditional missiles can carry only one warhead, whereas MIRVs can carry multiple warheads simultaneously. Warhead i.e., the front part of the missile which contains explosives.
The meaning of this feature is that many targets located hundreds of kilometers away from each other can be destroyed with a single missile. Multiple warheads can also be launched at the same target at once.

America developed MIRV technology in 1970
MIRV technology was first developed by America in 1970. By the end of the 20th century both the United States and the Soviet Union had several intercontinental and submarine launched ballistic missiles equipped with MIRVs.
