The process of repatriation to Israel of about 5,800 people of Bnei Menashe community settled in Manipur and Mizoram is going to begin. The community will be taken to Israel in a phased manner after the Israeli Cabinet approves a Rs 250 crore plan. By 2026, 1,200 people from the community will be sent to Israel. Whereas, the target of complete ‘homecoming’ has been set by 2030.
This community, located in the hills of northeastern India, considers itself the descendants of Menashe, one of the ‘Ten Lost Tribes’ of the Bible. After the Assyrian exile 2700 years ago they moved eastward and eventually settled in India. The Israeli government’s new plan is accelerating their ‘homecoming’. However, the tragedy of Manipur’s caste violence is also said to be hidden behind this boom.
The worldwide search for Jewish roots began in Israel in the 1950s. Under this, in 2005, Chief Rabbi of Israel Shlomo Amar gave religious recognition to this community following Jewish traditions.
Israel considers this a religious reunification. Additionally, it plans to settle this community in the Galilee region, thereby strengthening its northern border. In such a situation, Bnei Menashe has been given priority due to the possibility of faith, security and strategic importance. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has considered this an important Zionist decision.
The leaving members hope for peace and tranquility in Israel. Mizoram’s community leader Jeremiah L. We are returning to the ‘Promised Land’, says Hwamate. Violence forced us, but it is the call of our roots. One youth member said, ‘There is no security here, but in Israel you will get family reunification, job, housing and Hebrew education.’
