US President Donald Trump on Tuesday completely banned people from 7 more countries from coming to America. Along with this, restrictions have also been imposed on Palestinians. This decision has been taken after the firing of an Afghan refugee on National Guards near the White House last month.
Also, partial ban (ban on permanent residence) has been imposed on 15 other countries. Trump signed a declaration for this on Tuesday. With this, the number of countries imposing full or partial travel ban on coming to America has increased to 39.
Travel restrictions are already in place on 19 countries. A complete ban has now been imposed on 2 of these countries, Laos and Sierra Leone. This brought the number of countries with a complete ban to 7.
This step has been taken citing national security, public safety, weak investigation system and high rates of visa overstay (overstaying even after the visa expires). These new restrictions will come into effect from January 1. The announcement exempts permanent residents, diplomats, athletes.
Trump on Tuesday signed a proclamation halting the citizenship process.
Ban on non-immigrant visa lifted from Turkmenistan
According to the White House fact-sheet, the new announcement imposes a complete travel ban on Burkina Faso, Mali, Niger, South Sudan and Syria. A complete ban has also been imposed on Palestinians.
Earlier, Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem had said that the US administration is planning to expand the current travel ban from 19 to more than 30 countries.
At that time he did not reveal the exact numbers or the names of the countries. America has imposed a complete travel ban on Afghanistan, Myanmar, Burundi, Chad, Congo, Cuba, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Haiti, Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Togo, Turkmenistan, Venezuela, Yemen.
In the new announcement, partial entry restrictions have been imposed on 15 new countries. Partial sanctions on Burundi, Cuba, Togo and Venezuela will continue as before.
Turkmenistan is the only country where the ban on non-immigrant visas has been lifted, although the ban on immigrant visas remains in place.
Athletes, diplomats exempted from ban
Case-by-case exemptions are also provided for, but exemptions for family-based immigrant visas have been limited due to the risk of fraud.
This step has been taken to prevent foreign nationals coming from countries where there are serious deficiencies in screening, testing, and information sharing, in order to strengthen the security and public safety of the United States.

What is the difference between a complete ban and a partial ban?
According to the US State Department, a complete ban means that most of the citizens of that country are completely banned from entering America.
These include people seeking tourist visa, student visa, work visa and immigrant visa.
At the same time, a partial ban means that citizens of that country are banned from obtaining certain types of visas or entries, but not others.
That means you will not get an immigrant visa, but you can get a tourist visa. Students will get permission, but there will be a ban on work visa.
Afghan refugee shot National Guardsmen
In America, on November 26, two National Guardsmen were shot near the White House. Both of them died in the attack. An Afghan refugee was detained in this case.
According to FBI officials, the attacker was 29-year-old Rahmanullah Lakanwal. He came to America from Afghanistan in August 2021. He applied for refugee status in 2024 and was approved in April 2025.
