Former Mizoram Governor Swaraj Kaushal passed away at the age of 73 on Thursday. A distinguished legal mind, Kaushal was widely recognised for defending former Defence Minister George Fernandes in the well-known Baroda dynamite case during the Emergency. Following his demise Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed grief, describing him as a distinguished lawyer and a public figure committed to using the legal profession for the welfare of the underprivileged.
In a post on X, the Prime Minister said Kaushal made a mark early in his career, becoming the youngest Governor of India, and noted the lasting impression he left on the people of Mizoram during his tenure. Modi added that Kaushal’s contributions as a parliamentarian were “noteworthy”.

He became India’s youngest Governor and left a lasting impression on the people of Mizoram during his gubernatorial tenure,” he wrote on X.
“His insights as a Parliamentarian were also noteworthy. My thoughts are with his daughter Bansuri and the other family members in this sad hour. Om Shanti,” he added.
Bansuri Swaraj Shares Emotional Tribute
In a deeply personal message on X, Bansuri Swaraj wrote about the grief of losing her father and the values he had instilled in her. She said, “Your departure has descended upon us as the deepest pain in the heart yet the mind holds on the belief that you are now reunited with mother, in the presence of the almighty and eternal peace. Being your daughter is the greatest pride of my life and your legacy, values and blessings will be the bases of my journeys ahead.”
Her tribute reflected a mix of sorrow, pride, and gratitude, drawing heartfelt responses from supporters and public figures.
Other Leaders Express Condolences
Leaders from across the political spectrum honoured Kaushal’s memory and contributions. Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta described the news of his passing as “heartbreaking”. She acknowledged his long career in public life and the legal field, saying that his “invaluable contributions, service to the nation and society would always be remembered.”
