Two projects, one in Visakhapatnam’s Rushikonda coast and another in Maredumilli’s forests, are being designed for immersive wildlife experiences without harming the ecosystem

Andhra Pradesh, known for its long coastline, dense forests, and natural beauty, is preparing to reinvent its tourism experience with unique, nature-based attractions. The new state government has directed officials to develop innovative projects that can position the state as a global eco-tourism destination.
Two pilot projects, one in Visakhapatnam’s Rushikonda coast and another in Maredumilli’s lush forest region, are being designed to offer immersive wildlife experiences without harming the ecosystem.
Jungle Safari in Marredilli
Maredumilli forest, located in the Eastern Ghats, is one of Andhra’s most scenic and biodiverse regions. The area is home to thick forests, grasslands, rivers, and rich wildlife, making it ideal for eco-tourism.
A safari once existed here, but was discontinued due to poor management and infrastructure gaps. The government now plans to revive it as a full-fledged, professionally managed jungle safari over roughly 60 acres, using protected enclosures and designated vehicle routes to ensure visitor safety and wildlife preservation.
The idea is to let tourists experience wild animals, birds, and local flora in their natural surroundings, without disturbing the forest. Cafes and rest areas will be set up on the outskirts of the safari zone, providing refreshments while supporting employment and entrepreneurship for local communities, including tribal residents.
This would be the first major wildlife safari experience in Andhra Pradesh, similar to those in Karnataka’s Kabini, Maharashtra’s Tadoba, or Madhya Pradesh’s Kanha.
Dolphin-Watching Tours At Rushikonda Beach
While Maredumilli focuses on forests, Visakhapatnam’s coastline will showcase marine life. The government plans to launch guided dolphin-watching tours from Rushikonda Beach, where dolphins are naturally spotted during specific months.
As per the current plan, boats will take tourists 1.5 to 2 km into the ocean between 7 and 8 am, when dolphins are most active. Visitors will get a chance to watch pods of dolphins swimming, leaping, and occasionally approaching boats — an experience popular in coastal destinations like Goa, Kerala, Sri Lanka, and the Maldives.
To enhance the tourist experience, temporary beachfront tents, food stalls, and rest zones are planned. The proposal also includes creating a small artificial tidal pond near the shore where fish and crabs will be bred. Tourists will be allowed to try “live catch” experiences and prepare their own freshly caught seafood, giving it a recreational and culinary dimension.
Community-Based Tourism & Eco-Employment
A key focus of both projects is community involvement. Locals are expected to receive training in hospitality, wildlife protection, boating safety, eco-guiding, and food services. This would help create sustainable jobs for local youth, fishermen, tribal families, and forest dwellers, while promoting responsible tourism.
Discussions are reportedly underway with a Kakinada-based company to manage operations and provide professional support.
Andhra Pradesh’s Larger Tourism Vision
Andhra Pradesh has long been known for temples, beaches, and pilgrimages, not so much for wildlife or marine tourism. With Maredumilli safari and Rushikonda dolphin tours, officials aim to change that perception and position Visakhapatnam as an international nature-tourism hub.
If implemented successfully, these projects could help Andhra Pradesh compete with states like Kerala, Karnataka, and Goa, attracting both domestic and foreign travellers seeking nature-based experiences.
