Bolsonaro was under house arrest since August
In August, the Supreme Court had ordered Bolsonaro’s house arrest. Justice Alexandre de Morais had said that Bolsonaro sent public messages through his three MP sons, which is a violation of sanctions.
Bolsonaro addressed a rally of his supporters in Rio de Janeiro from his son’s phone. During this he had said – Good afternoon Copacabana, good afternoon my Brazil, this is for our freedom.
The court had called it a direct violation of the rules. After this, the Supreme Court ordered him to be kept under house arrest, wear an electronic ankle monitor and confiscate all the mobile phones from his house.
Bolsonaro is also accused of damaging an electronic ankle monitor while under house arrest. The court said that in an attempt to escape, they tried to burn the device with a soldering iron.
In the video made public by the court, the monitor was seen burnt and damaged. Although it is still tied to Bolsonaro’s leg. In the footage, Bolsonaro admitted that he had used the tool on the device.

Bolsonaro has consistently denied any wrongdoing linked to the coup plot. He is considered close to US President Donald Trump. Trump called the court’s decision a witch hunt.
Trump said he recently spoke to Bolsonaro and planned to meet with him soon. Trump had imposed a 50% tariff on goods imported from Brazil. The visa of SC Justice Moraes was also cancelled.
