China has denied allegations of mistreatment of Arunachal Pradesh-born Indian woman Pem Wangjom Thangdok at Shanghai airport.

China’s Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning said that there was no coercion, detention or harassing behavior with the woman. He said the airline also provided rest, water and food facilities to the woman.

Pam, an Indian living in Britain, had alleged that Chinese authorities had declared her Indian passport invalid because it mentioned Arunachal Pradesh as her birthplace. She was going from London to Japan on 21 November. They had a 3-hour transit at Shanghai Pudong Airport.

Passport confiscated, not allowed to board the flight

Pem alleged that her passport was confiscated and she was not allowed to board the next flight to Japan despite having a legal visa.

Pem also alleged that several immigration officers present there and China Eastern Airlines employees kept making fun of her, laughing at her and taunting her for applying for a Chinese passport.

Pam said what should have been a 3-hour transit turned into an 18-hour ordeal for her. He said that during this period he was neither given correct information, nor given proper food, nor was he allowed to use the airport facilities.

Pam came out with the help of Indian Embassy

Due to being stuck in the transit zone, Pem was neither able to book a new ticket, nor buy anything to eat, nor could she move from one terminal to another.

Pam claimed that officials repeatedly pressured her to buy a new China Eastern ticket and only then would her passport be returned. Due to this he suffered huge loss of money on flight and hotel booking.

Eventually, with the help of a friend in Britain, Pem contacted the Indian Embassy in Shanghai. Indian officials helped him get out of Shanghai by boarding a night flight.

He has demanded the Indian government to raise this issue with Beijing and demand action against immigration officials and airline staff. It should also be decided that Indian citizens of Arunachal Pradesh should not have to face such problems in future.

China considers Arunachal as its part

China continuously claims that Arunachal Pradesh is not a part of India but is a part of it. For this reason, it often refuses to accept documents of Indian citizens, especially those born in Arunachal.

China says that it considers Arunachal as South Tibet, while India clearly says that Arunachal Pradesh has always been an integral state of India.
