Sheikh Hasina sentenced to death
On November 17, Bangladesh’s International Crimes Tribunal (ICT-BD) sentenced Hasina and Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, who was the Home Minister in her government, to death on charges of crimes against humanity. This hearing of both was held in absentia.
He was sentenced to death by the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) of Dhaka for inciting and ordering the murder. In the remaining cases he was sentenced to life imprisonment. ICT had made him an accused in 5 cases.
The tribunal named Sheikh Hasina as the mastermind of the killings during the July 2024 student movement. The third accused, former IGP Abdullah Al-Mamun, was sentenced to 5 years in prison. Mamun is in custody and has become a government witness.

Hasina came to India after the coup
Sheikh Hasina and former Home Minister Asaduzzaman left the country after the coup on 5 August 2024. Both the leaders have been living in India for the last 15 months.
Bangladesh PM’s office issued a statement saying that according to the extradition treaty between India and Bangladesh, it is India’s responsibility to hand over the former Bangladeshi PM to us.
