Reliance Industries Limited has completely stopped using Russian crude in its Export Only (SEZ) refinery in Jamnagar. The company said that the import of Russian crude into the SEZ unit has been stopped since November 20. From December 1, all fuel export from here will be from non-Russian crude.
However, Reliance will continue to use Russian crude oil for domestic use. The company has taken this decision to comply with the European Union’s sanctions. From January 2026, no products made from Russian crude will be sold in the European Union.
Russian oil export refinery will be closed
Reliance has two refineries in the Jamnagar complex. One SEZ unit which exports only and the other old unit which supplies the domestic market. The company said that old Russian crude inventory is currently being processed at the SEZ unit. As soon as that ends, new production will be only from non-Russian crude.

Russian oil will be used for domestic use A Reliance spokesperson said, “Import of Russian crude has been stopped at the SEZ refinery from November 20. From December 1, all product exports from here will be made from non-Russian crude. He said that the committed Russian crude cargo till October 22 is being honoured.
The last cargo was loaded on 12 November. Russian cargoes arriving on or after November 20 will be processed at the Domestic Tariff Area (DTA) refinery.

Understand the whole matter in 3 questions and answers here
Question 1: What are the European Union’s sanctions on Russia?
answer: The European Union (EU) has imposed several sanctions to stop Russia’s earnings after Russia’s attack on Ukraine. The latest and biggest sanction among these is on Russian crude oil and its products (petrol, diesel, ATF etc.). From January 2026, nothing made from Russian oil will be sold in the EU.
Question 2: Why does Reliance have to follow these sanctions?
answer: A part of Reliance’s Jamnagar refinery (SEZ unit) is only for export and its major customer is EU. Reliance buys Russian crude cheaply, refines it, makes petrol and diesel and sells it to Europe.
Question 3: What harm can happen if the sanctions are not followed?
Answer: Direct import of Russian crude is already banned in EU. If any company makes fuel from Russian crude and sells it to the EU, that too will be banned. If Reliance continues to use Russian crude, the fuel made from it will not be sold in the EU from January 2026. Due to which there will be a loss of billions of rupees every month.
