Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced his new Super Intelligence Lab in June. Then he told that 11 scientists involved in this project are working. Their aim is to create such machines which are more powerful than the human brain.
Internal memos obtained by The New York Times revealed that all these 11 scientists are immigrants educated in other countries. Of these, 7 scientists are from China, while the remaining 4 are from India, Britain, South Africa and Australia.
The newspaper has written that for a long time a section of government officials and experts in America have been calling China the biggest threat in the field of AI. But reports show that the major and revolutionary AI research being done in America is being carried forward largely with the help of Chinese scientists.

This is Alexander Wong, chief of Meta’s AI unit. Joined Meta in June 2025. Mark Zuckerberg had spent Rs 1.26 lakh crore to bring them into the company.
American companies dependent on Chinese scientists
META has already been heavily dependent on Chinese scientists. It is often joked within the company that newcomers have to learn two things. The first is Hack, i.e. the company’s programming language and the second is Mandarin, because there are a large number of Chinese researchers in AI teams.
This year, Meta got about 6,300 H-1B visas approved, which is the highest after Amazon. Meta has collaborated with Chinese organizations on at least 28 research papers since 2018.
Not only Meta, but American companies like Apple, Google, Intel and Salesforce have also done many important research in collaboration with Chinese organizations. Microsoft has partnered the most, i.e. in at least 92 important papers.
One-third of top AI scientists are from China
Since the arrival of the Trump government in America, the administration has adopted a strict immigration policy. Apart from this, anti-China sentiment has increased a lot in Silicon Valley also. Despite this, Chinese researchers are not only staying in America but are also playing an important role.
Research published in 2020 by the Paulson Institute estimated that about one-third of the world’s top AI scientists are from China, and most of them are working in American institutions. AI industry taking maximum advantage of Chinese talent
A new study by the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace found that of the 100 top Chinese researchers working at US universities and companies in 2019, 87 are still working there today. That means they have been staying in America since before the arrival of ChatGPT till during the AI boom.
Matt Sheehan, associated with this research, believes that America’s AI industry takes the most advantage of Chinese talent. Chinese students come to America to study and work and stay here despite many challenges.

There is still a great need for engineers and scientists from China to run American tech companies (like Google, Meta, etc.).
America-China did the most research on AI
Despite the tough competition between America and China, their cooperation on AI also continues. A research by a company named AlphaXiv revealed that since 2018, no other two countries have been able to do as much research on AI together.
Many people in Silicon Valley fear that Chinese citizens may give the technology and research of American companies to the Chinese government. Some incidents increase this fear. For example, in 2023, a hacker stole technical information from OpenAI’s internal messaging system.
Experts say that despite these risks, the benefits of working with Chinese researchers are much greater. He believes that if the Trump administration takes more strict action on the talents coming from China, then American companies will suffer the biggest loss.
According to Georgetown University expert Helen Toner, such restrictions can harm America’s AI advantage. Without Chinese researchers, Silicon Valley may lag behind in the global race.
