Arjun Erigaisi Surges Into FIDE World Cup Quarterfinals; Registers Dominant Win Against USA’s Levon Aronian

Grandmaster Arjun Erigaisi powered into the quarterfinals of the FIDE World Cup in Goa on Saturday, dismantling two-time champion Levon Aronian in the second game of their round-of-16 clash.

And he did it with the black pieces, marking a statement victory that underlined the 20-year-old Indian’s tenacity.

How It Unfolded

After a balanced draw in the first classical game, Arjun looked unfazed heading into the must-win return game. He steered the Italian Opening into familiar terrain, signalling early that the colour disadvantage meant nothing to him.

The middlegame began quietly with a standard pawn structure, but Arjun was the first to rattle the equilibrium. A well-timed central break created an imbalanced pawn formation, giving his knights the freedom to circle ominously around Aronian’s kingside.

Aronian, usually ice-cool and recently in excellent form, blinked for the first time in the tournament. Faced with a worsening position and dwindling defensive ideas, the Armenian-turned-American stumbled with his 28th move, allowing Arjun to pounce instantly.

A sparkling knight sacrifice followed, ripping open Aronian’s position and sealing a memorable win for the Indian.

The triumph leaves Arjun just three match victories away from lifting the prestigious World Cup title.

Harikrishna To Face Tiebreak

Elsewhere, Grandmaster P. Harikrishna was held to a second consecutive draw by Mexico’s Jose Eduardo Martinez Alcantara, sending their match into Sunday’s rapid tiebreakers. With three coveted spots for the next Candidates Tournament at stake, and a prize pool of USD 2 million, the pressure will only rise from here.

Results Elsewhere

Uzbekistan’s Nodirbek Yakubboev secured a smooth passage to the last eight by eliminating Armenia’s Gabriel Sargissian. Other matches also headed for tiebreaks: American Sam Shankland split points with Russia’s Daniil Dubov, while the all-Russian showdown between Andrey Esipenko and Aleksey Grebnev remains deadlocked in classical play.
