A trade deal is expected between India and America soon. US President Donald Trump made this claim today at the APEC CEO Summit being held in South Korea on October 29. He said- “There will be a trade deal with India soon, I respect PM Modi.”
Trump mentioned India-Pakistan tension in his speech. He told that when both the countries were fighting, I asked both of them to stop the war, but they refused. During this, he also imitated PM Modi and said in Modi’s tone, “No we will fight.”
Threatened to impose 250% tariff
Trump claimed that he had threatened to impose 250% tariffs on both countries. Two days later, both of them called and agreed to the ceasefire.
During this, he also praised Pakistan Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif and Field Marshal Asim Munir. He described Munir as a tremendous fighter.

Why did Trump call Modi ‘killer’ and ‘nice looking guy’?
- Nicest Looking Cow: Trump has praised Modi’s personal appeal by calling him the ‘Niceest Looking Guy’.
- Killer and Tough as Hell: It doesn’t mean murderer, but a compliment. That is, Modi seems soft from outside, but is strong from inside. Trump is calling Modi a “balanced leader”.
Piyush Goyal had said – India does not make deals by keeping guns.
Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal had said last week regarding the trade deal with America – India does not make deals in a hurry and with a gun to the head.
Goyal said that any trade deal should be seen from a long term perspective. India never takes decisions in haste or impulsiveness.
India is also looking for new markets to deal with high tariffs. On the question of making the deal on one’s own terms, he said that trade deals are always done with a long term perspective.
US wants entry in India’s dairy sector, hence delay in deal
America wants its dairy products like milk, cheese, ghee to be allowed to be imported into India. India is the largest milk producing country in the world and crores of small farmers are engaged in this sector.
The Indian government fears that if American dairy products come to India, they could cause huge losses to local farmers. Apart from this, religious sentiments are also attached.
In America, enzymes made from animal bones (such as rennet) are added to the food of cows to provide better nutrition. India considers the milk of such cows as ‘non-veg milk’ i.e. non-vegetarian milk.

Target to increase trade to $500 billion by 2030
India and the US aim to increase bilateral trade from the current $191 billion to $500 billion by 2030. According to Commerce Ministry data, India’s exports to the US increased by 21.64% to $33.53 billion in April-July 2025, while imports increased by 12.33% to $17.41 billion.
America remained India’s largest trading partner during this period, with trade worth $12.56 billion. India’s exports to America have been continuously increasing since April.

Total 50% tariff on India
US President Trump had announced to impose 25% additional tariff on India on August 6. This order will come into effect from August 27. It has been said in the executive order that this action has been taken on India due to Russian oil purchase. Earlier on July 30, he had announced 25% tariff on India. Now India is facing a total tariff of 50%.
