Lammens ‘Not Schmeichel Yet’: Ruben Amorim Cools Hype Around Man United’s New GK

Manchester United’s newest goalkeeper, Senne Lammens, impressed all with his stellar showing in his debut against Sunderland.

But the Red Devils’ boss Ruben Amorim has urged caution over early comparisons between him and club legend Peter Schmeichel, insisting the young Belgian still has much to prove.

Maintaining Form Key To Success

In Friday’s press conference ahead of United’s trip to Liverpool, Amorim was asked about fan chatter calling Lammens “the new Schmeichel.”

“Nothing is impossible. You have to prove it during the week [in training],” Amorim said.

“Of course, he did a great job. It’s possible he’ll start against Liverpool. The first impression is important, but maintaining it is even more. He is not Schmeichel yet.”

The United boss praised Lammens’ calmness under pressure but warned that one game doesn’t make a career.

“He’s a young guy with talent, and he showed a lot of composure – the fans liked it. But that’s in the past. We need to show it again in the next game.”

Amorim: Ratcliffe’s Support Means Nothing Without Results

The Portuguese, nearing a year in charge, has yet to record consecutive Premier League wins.

United currently sit 10th in the PL, having lost three of their opening seven games, and are still recovering from last season’s 15th-place finish — their worst in 51 years — and a Europa League final defeat to Tottenham.

Despite the poor form, Amorim says he still feels support from Ratcliffe, CEO Omar Berrada, and director of football Jason Wilcox.

“I can feel it every day. But that support means nothing if we don’t win. At big clubs, every weekend is about proving ourselves,” he said.

Well, a Herculean task lies ahead for Amorim and the Red Devils, who take on the mighty Liverpool on Sunday.
