Erling Haaland endured one of the most dramatic penalty sequences of his career as he missed two consecutive spot-kicks for Norway in their 2026 World Cup qualifier against Israel in Oslo on Saturday.

Known for his calm under pressure, the striker had converted 12 of his previous 13 penalties for club and country. But he failed to find his mojo this time around.

The Manchester City superstar’s first penalty — struck low and firm — was saved by Israeli goalkeeper Daniel Peretz. However, Polish referee Szymon Marciniak ordered a retake after Peretz was judged to have stepped off his line too early.

Given a lifeline, Haaland switched sides on the second attempt — but the result was déjà vu. Peretz guessed right again, diving full stretch to deny the Norwegian for a second time as the home crowd gasped in disbelief.

“It’s rare to see Haaland miss once — let alone twice in the same match,” one Norwegian commentator noted during the broadcast.

“But the mark of a great striker is how quickly he bounces back”.

And boy, he sure did that.

Redemption After the Misses

Haaland didn’t let the double disappointment derail him for long.

Because guess what? He scored a hat-trick afterwards.

The 24-year-old has now scored 12 goals in nine appearances for Manchester City this season, taking his overall tally for the club to an extraordinary 136 goals in just 155 games.

With his hat-trick today, Haaland also crossed 50 goals for his nation and has now scored in his last 10 consecutive matches for club and country

Protests Outside the Pitch

Off the field, the match unfolded amid tense political undertones. Several hundred demonstrators gathered in Oslo ahead of kickoff, voicing support for Palestine as Israel’s national team took the field.

Inside the Ullevaal Stadium, activists briefly unfurled a massive Palestinian flag alongside a banner reading “Let Children Live.”

Whistles echoed during the Israeli national anthem, and a pro-Palestinian protester was forcibly removed from the stands.
