Japan is going to get a woman Prime Minister for the first time. The ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) has elected former Economic Security Minister Sane Takichi as the new president.
The president of the majority party in Japan becomes the PM. In such a situation, it is almost certain that she will become the next Prime Minister.
Taki is considered close to former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe. Shinzo was the longest PM in Japan. At the same time, 4 PMs have changed in the last 5 years in Japan. Taki will be the 5th leader of Japan.

The nationalist image is a nationalist image because of being close to former Prime Minister Abe of Takiichi.
Defeated former Prime Minister’s son
Takiyi won the election by defeating the son of former Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi. Koizumi is currently the country’s Agriculture Minister. Voting will be held in Parliament soon to make Takaichi a PM.
Takaichi PM Shigeru will replace Ishiba. The party had to face defeat in the upper house election held in July. After this, Ishiba’s opposition to the party increased.
LDP has chosen Takichi at a time when people in the country are angry with inflation and have started supporting opposition parties. The party hopes that she will gain public support and remain in power.

Sane Takaichi won the election by defeating Agriculture Minister Koizumi.
PM Shigeru Ishiba resigned in September
Shigeru Ishiba became PM in September 2024. He was ‘outsider’ at the party, that is, he had no godfather. He promised that he would fix inflation and economic problems, but his time was difficult.
1. Blow of election defeat: The LDP-Comeito coalition lost majority in the lower house (House of Representative) election of October 2024. Then there was a bad defeat in the upper Sadan (House of Counselors) elections of July 2025. The party lost a majority in both houses for the first time since 1955.
2. Party pressure: After the defeat, the inner people of the party started pressurizing Ishiba to resign. They allege that Ishiba is ‘very generous’, while the party needs a conservative leader. Ishiba resigned on 7 September 2025. He said- I do not want to split in the party. Now I will give a chance to the new generation.
