Sonam Wangchuk’s wife, Gitanjali J Angmo, has moved the Supreme Court against the arrest of her husband, days after she wrote to the President of India, Prime Minister, Home Minister, Law Minister, and the Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh, demanding her husband’s immediate release. In her appeal, she questioned whether it “was a sin” to support the people’s cause.

Gitanjali, in her letter, asked the president whether it was a crime to raise awareness about climate change, melting glaciers, education reform, and the rights of local communities in Ladakh.

“Is it a sin to espouse the cause of people and fight against reckless and unchecked development activities in a ecology fragile area of Ladakh?” she asked.

Sonam Wangchuk’s Arrest

Activist Sonam Wangchuk was arrested on September 26 by With Police under the National Security Act (NSA), days after violent protests in Ladakh left four people dead and over 90 injured. He was later shifted to Central Jail in Jodhpur, Rajasthan.

Wangchuk had been on a hunger strike, leading a protest demanding statehood, local job protections, and constitutional safeguards for Ladakh. However, the protests turned violent, and during the unrest, clashes with police led to at least four deaths.

The activist also ended his hunger strike in view of the violence and urging peace. However, he was arrested in connection with the violent protests and for alleged incitement to mob violence via “provocative statements.”

The government also criticised him and the Union Home Ministry revoked the FCRA (Foreign Contribution Regulation Act) licence of his NGO, SECMOL, citing violations.

Sonam Wangchuk Denies Allegations

Sonam Wangchuk has denied all the allegations of inciting violence, saying that it only reflects long-standing frustration among locals with central policies.

His wife, Gitanjali Angmohas strongly condemned the labeling of Wangchuk as “anti-national,” calling such claims “blatant lies” and claiming a “witch-hunt” is underway against him
