Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) has only received 2 GE engines for the Tejas Mk1A this year, falling short of the planned 12 by year-end. According to sources, the aerospace and defence company was expected to receive two more engines in August, but these deliveries did not occur.

With this delay, there are concerns about meeting the 12-engine target by 2025.

The development is part of a larger effort to enhance India’s air defense capabilities. The Tejas Mark-1A is a single-engine multi-role fighter aircraft designed to undertake air defense, maritime reconnaissance and strike roles.

Before being inducted next month, the two jets will undergo weapons firing tests this month.

According to a senior HAL official, the delivery schedule for the 83 Tejas Mk1A jets has already slipped by at least four quarters.

Tejas Mark 1A is an upgraded version of the Tejas Mark 1, which is serving in two squadrons of the Indian Air Force – No. 45, the Flying Daggers and No. 18, the Flying Bullets.
