Tata Group has started construction of a ₹27,000 crore semiconductor assembly and test facility in Assam. This semiconductor plant will produce 4.83 crore semiconductor chips every day. It is expected to be operational by 2025.
The chips made here will be used in sectors including electric vehicles, communication and network infrastructure. On February 29, 2024, the Union Cabinet approved this project. This project is part of India’s semiconductor mission.
27,000 jobs will be created, 15,000 direct and 12,000 indirect
Tata Sons Chairman N Chandrasekaran said- ‘This plant is expected to create 27,000 jobs. It will have 15,000 direct and 12,000 indirect jobs. We hope that in 2025 we will be able to complete this project and start operations quickly.’

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and Tata Sons Limited Chairman N Chandrasekaran performed the ‘Bhoomi Pujan’ of the semiconductor plant at Jagiroad, Assam.
Tata is building two semiconductor plants, one in Gujarat and one in Assam
On March 13, Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone of three semiconductor facilities. Of these, 2 are being built in Gujarat and 1 in Assam. Tata Group is setting up two of these three plants. One plant is being built in Dholera, Gujarat and one in Jagiroad, Assam.
Government is increasing semiconductor production, PLI scheme also announced
The Indian government also announced the PLI scheme to promote semiconductors in the country. The Indian semiconductor market was valued at $27.2 billion in 2021 and is expected to grow at an annual rate of 19% to reach $64 billion by 2026.
Taiwan makes 60% of the world’s semiconductor chips
According to the Semiconductor Industry Association (SEMI), Taiwan accounts for 60% of global chip fabrication capacity (the ability to physically make semiconductors). TSMC alone manufactures about half of the world’s semiconductors.

The chip is made of silicon, it is like the brain of the gadget
Semiconductor chips are made of silicon, which controls electricity in the circuit. This chip helps gadgets to operate like a brain. Any electronic instrument is incomplete without it. Computers, laptops, cars, washing machines, ATMs, hospital machines and even smartphones work on semiconductor chips.
