A major fire broke out at a residential building in Delhi’s Vivek Vihar area late Saturday night, killing at least nine people and leaving several others injured, officials said.
The blaze erupted in a building located in Vivek Vihar Phase-I, affecting flats on the second, third and fourth floors. The fire department received the information about the blaze at around 3:47 am on Sunday.
The fire alert prompted immediate response from local police, fire services and disaster management teams. Acting swiftly, multiple teams launched rescue and relief operations as several residents were trapped inside the building when the fire erupted.
Further, firefighters managed to pull out multiple occupants, with around 10 to 15 people rescued during the operation. Meanwhile, the at least eight of the injured were reported to be in serious condition, while others sustained minor injuries and were shifted to Guru Teg Bahadur Hospital for treatment. The exact behind the fire is not known yet. The flames have been brought under control.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (Shahdara) RP Meena said search operations were ongoing on the top floor due to heavy smoke. The exact cause of the fire will be determined after a detailed inspection, DCP Meena said.
“Search on top floor is ongoing… Fire is controlled but a lot of smoke. Firefighters are searching the top floor. Cause of fire will be ascertained following a detailed inspection.”
A total of 12 fire tenders were deployed to douse the flames, with support from DDMA personnel, traffic police and local authorities. Furthermore, the identities of the deceased are yet to be established. Further investigation is underway.
