When the T20I series against the West Indies got underway on October 6, the Indian team had just returned from winning the gold medal at the Asian Games in Japan. A jetlagged Shreyas Iyer revealed how he was looking forward to getting some sleepas the match happened just three days after the final against Pakistan.
Now, India faces a similar situation. Just five days after the West Indies series in Bengaluru concluded, they will be back in action. This time in Christchurch, taking on New Zealand for the start of a five-match series.
Adaptation will now be key and Sanju Samson will have to draw on his experience to cope with the tight turnaround. Speaking to the broadcasters ahead of the Bengaluru T20I, Samson said that they will have one day of batting practice in New Zealand before the match gets underway.
“To be very honest, with the way the schedule is structured these days, you don’t get much time to practice or prepare.
“That’s where your experience comes in. You try to stay in a good mental space and make the most of whatever time you get. We have just one day of batting practice,” said Samson.
‘WE’LL TAKE 2 OR 3 BALLS TO ASSESS THINGS’
Samson said that the quick turnaround means that India will need to take their learnings from the West Indies series forward to New Zealand.
The Indian opener said that they may take some time to get adjusted to things to return to their style of play and make sure they respect the conditions first.
“We’ll reach there on the 20th, practice on the 21st, and play the match on the 22nd. So, we’ll try to carry forward the good things we’ve done here. It takes a little time to adjust to the conditions there, so we’ll take two or three balls to assess them. We’ll follow the things we’ve learned through experience and play while respecting the conditions,” he said.
Luckily for India, the Bengaluru T20I was washed out after 7.4 oversmeaning they will get some rest before heading out to New Zealand.
