By-elections are held today on all 288 seats of Maharashtra Assembly and 38 seats of the second phase in Jharkhand, as well as 15 assembly seats of 4 states and Nanded Lok Sabha seat of Maharashtra. Voting will take place from 7 am to 6 pm.

Out of these 15 seats, 13 have become vacant due to MLAs becoming MPs, death of 1 and 1 going to jail. Of these, 2 seats are reserved for SC. Voting is to be held on maximum 9 seats of Uttar Pradesh.

Of the 15 seats, BJP, Congress and Samajwadi Party (SP) had 4 seats each and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) and Nishad Party had 1 seat each.

Nanded Lok Sabha seat of Maharashtra is vacant due to the death of Congress MP Vasantrao Chavan. He died in August 2024, just two months after the Lok Sabha elections. The party has made his son Ravindra Chavan its candidate. Whereas, BJP has fielded Dr. Santuk Humbarde.

Earlier, voting on 14 seats in 3 states was to be held on November 13, but due to Guru Nanak Dev Ji’s Prakash Parv and Kalapathy Rastholsevam festivals, the Election Commission had changed the date.

Uttar Pradesh: Litmus test of 2027 on 9 seats of Purvanchal, Awadh and West UP

The 9 assembly seats of the by-election are part of many political and cultural areas of the state. This is why it is being seen as a litmus test for the 2027 assembly elections.

SP has captured 37 out of 80 seats, giving a blow to BJP in the Lok Sabha elections. At the same time, BJP has reduced by half from 62 to 33 seats. In this respect, this by-election is important for both the parties.

Both the parties have distributed tickets in this by-election keeping in mind the caste equations of 2027. BJP has fielded candidates on 8 seats. Meerapur seat has been left for ally party RLD.

NDA has given tickets to 5 OBCs, 2 Brahmins, 1 Dalit and 1 Kshatriya. The alliance has tried to woo all castes even among the backward classes. For this, leaders of Maurya, Kurmi, Pal, Nishad and Yadav communities have been given a chance.

At the same time, SP has fielded 3 OBC, 2 Dalit and 4 Muslim candidates, repeating the PDA (Backward, Dalit, Minority) formula. Although 6 out of 9 SP candidates are from political families, while BJP has also given a chance to new faces.

Of these 9 seats, SP was holding 4, BJP 3, Nishad Party and RLD 1 seat each. BJP to win all four seats held by SP in by-elections Rampur Model Focusing on implementation. Of these, both the parties have put in full force on Karhal and Kundarki seats.

Karhal seat of Mainpuri district is considered the stronghold of Mulayam Singh family. Akhilesh Yadav has fielded his nephew Tej Pratap Yadav from here. He has been the MP of Mainpuri. This seat has become vacant after Akhilesh was elected MP from Kannauj Lok Sabha seat. Here, BJP has fielded Akhilesh’s brother-in-law Anujesh Yadav as its candidate to counter SP’s nepotism.

At the same time, BJP has given ticket to Ramveer Singh Thakur from Muslim dominated Kundarki seat of Moradabad. He had contested and lost from this seat in 2012 and 2017. BJP has won here only once in 1993. This is the reason why BJP has fielded 4 of its ministers to win this seat.

Not only this, to win this seat BJP has appointed 7000 Panna Pramukhs. Along with this, the booth president and his executive are also working wholeheartedly at a total of 436 booths. This seat is also important because it is in Moradabad, the home district of BJP state president Bhupendra Singh. On the other hand, SP has fielded Haji Rizwan on this seat. He has been MLA from here three times.

Punjab: Relying on dynasty politics and turncoats, all four BJP candidates are from other parties

In all the four assembly seats of the state, all the parties have expressed confidence in turncoats and dynasty politics. The 12 candidates from Congress, AAP and BJP include 6 turncoats, 2 MPs’ wives and 1 MP’s son.

All four BJP candidates have come from other parties. At the same time, Akali Dal is not taking part in the by-elections. These seats had become vacant after their MLAs became MPs. All four seats fall in the rural belt of Punjab. Of these, three were held by Congress and one by AAP.

Amrita Vading, wife of Congress state president and Ludhiana MP Amarinder Singh Raja Vading, is contesting from Giddarbaha seat. Amarinder has won 3 consecutive elections from here. AAP has fielded Hardeep Singh.

Whereas, BJP has given ticket to Manpreet Badal. He left Congress in January 2023. Manpreet is the nephew of former CM Prakash Singh Badal and cousin of former Akali Dal chief Sukhbir Badal. Manpreet is the person who brought the current CM of Punjab Bhagwant Mann into politics.

Congress has given ticket to Jatinder Kaur, wife of Gurdaspur MP and former Deputy CM Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa, on Dera Baba Nanak seat. He has also been winning this seat for the last three elections. However, his vote share has been decreasing every time. It was 36.70% in 2022 compared to 50.22% in 2012.

BJP has fielded Ravikaran Singh from this seat. He had contested against Sukhjinder on Akali Dal ticket in 2022, but lost by 466 votes. He joined BJP before the Lok Sabha elections. Ravikaran’s chances of victory have increased due to Akali Dal not contesting the by-elections. Whereas, AAP has given ticket to Gurdeep Singh Randhawa.

AAP has given ticket to Ishank Chabbewal, son of Hoshiarpur MP Dr. Rajkumar from Chabbewal seat. Rajkumar became MLA from Chabbewal on Congress ticket in 2022. Before the Lok Sabha elections, he joined AAP and became an MP.

Congress has given ticket to Ranjit Kumar from Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP). Ranjit, who had been the president of the District Bar Association, had contested the Lok Sabha elections from Hoshiarpur on a BSP ticket. He was associated with BSP since the time of Kanshi Ram.

At the same time, BJP has made Sohan Singh Thandal its candidate on this seat. He left Akali Dal and joined BJP a day before the end of nomination date.

AAP has fielded Harinder Singh Dhaliwal, friend of Sangrur MP Gurmeet Singh Hayer, as its candidate for Barnala seat. BJP has fielded Kewal Singh Dhillon, a two-time MLA from Congress. Congress has given ticket to Kuldeep Singh.

Uttarakhand: Congress-BJP have confidence in former MLAs, CM Dhami also took part in campaigning.

For the by-elections, both Congress and BJP parties have expressed confidence in their former MLAs. Congress has given ticket to Manoj Rawat, who became MLA in 2017 from this seat. The party has ignored many big names and made them candidates. He stood third in the 2022 assembly elections. Despite this, he remained continuously active in the area. This is the reason why the party has expressed confidence in him.

BJP has fielded two-time former MLA Asha Nautiyal. She has been MLA from the same seat in 2002 and 2007. She had lost to Shailarani Rawat of Congress in 2012. Asha Nautiyal is also the state president of Mahila Morcha. BJP has used its full strength. From State President to Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami have been busy campaigning.

Kerala: Contest between Congress and BJP, Congress rebel makes by-election interesting

Voting will be held on Palakkad, one of the two assembly seats in the state, on Wednesday. Voting has taken place on the second seat Chelakkara on 13 November. Palakkad Assembly seat had fallen vacant after Congress MLA Shafi Parambil was elected MP from Vadakara.

Congress has given ticket to Youth Congress state president Rahul BR and BJP to its state general secretary C Krishnakumar. Krishnakumar has also been a four-time councilor and vice-president of Palakkad Municipality.

In the 2021 assembly elections, BJP candidate E Sreedharan lost from this seat by just 3859 votes. This time too the contest is between Congress and BJP. The Sangh is also engaged in the election campaign with full force. Volunteers from many other districts have also been camping here for weeks.

At the same time, independent candidate P Sarin made the by-election interesting. He was the chief of the state digital media cell of Congress. When Sarin expressed his displeasure over Rahul BR getting the ticket, Congress expelled him from the party on October 17 due to anti-party activities. Sarin, who was an Indian Audit and Accounts Service (IAAS) officer, is now contesting as an independent.

Maharashtra: Nanded Lok Sabha by-election, former CM Ashok Chavan’s credibility at stake.

Nanded Lok Sabha seat of Marathwada region has become a question of credibility for both BJP and Congress. The challenge for BJP is even tougher because the party has suffered a crushing defeat in this area in the Lok Sabha elections.

Congress has given ticket to Ravindra Chavan, son of late MP Vasantrao. Whereas, BJP has fielded Dr. Santuk Humbarde. The special thing is that Santuk’s brother Mohan Humbarde is the outgoing Congress MLA from Nanded South and is contesting the elections this time too. He is considered close to former CM Ashok Chavan.

Nanded is the stronghold of veteran Congress leader Ashok Chavan (now in BJP). His father had also been CM. The Chavan family dominates all elections like local body, assembly, Lok Sabha. After Chavan joined BJP in February 2024, the situation of Congress here was considered bad, but Vasantrao’s victory surprised everyone.

Chavan’s daughter Shreejay is also starting her political innings from Bhokar assembly seat in Maharashtra elections. This seat also comes in Nanded Lok Sabha. This is the reason why Ashok Chavan’s reputation is at stake in this election.
