Taking a big decision for all the workers and employees of the country, the government has implemented four new labor codes from Friday. Earlier, there were 29 different labor laws, by extracting the essential points, they have now been converted into 4 simple and clear rules.
The objective of these new rules is to provide timely and overtime pay, minimum wage, equal opportunity and salary to women, social security, free health checkup to every worker. Under the new law, the employee will get the benefit of gratuity in only 1 year instead of 5.
The government says that the old labor laws were made between 1930–1950, when work, industry and technology were completely different from today. The new codes have been created keeping in mind the modern needs and international standards. Therefore, the old 29 labor laws have been simplified and converted into four labor codes.

Know the benefits of the new labor code in detail…
1. Benefits of permanent level to fixed-term staff: Fixed-term workers will now enjoy the same benefits as permanent workers, such as social security, medical cover and paid leave. To get gratuity, it will take only one year instead of 5 years. This will reduce over-dependence on contract laborers and promote direct hiring.
2. Minimum wage and timely payment for all workers: Workers in every sector will get minimum wages linked to the National Floor Rate, along with timely payments and unauthorized deductions will be stopped.
3. Women allowed in all shifts and job roles: Women will be able to work in night shifts and in all categories with their approval and safety measures. Like mining, heavy machinery and dangerous places. Equal payment is necessary and their representation in grievance panels is necessary.
4. Better Working-Hours Rules and Overtime Protection: In most sectors, working hours will be 8–12 hours per day and 48 hours per week, with double pay for overtime and written consent required where necessary. In sectors like exports, leaves will accumulate after 180 working days.
5. Universal Appointment Letters and Formalization Push: Now it will be necessary for all employers to give appointment letter to every worker. This will keep the job records of the workers clean, there will be transparency in the salary and it will be easy for them to access the benefits. With this step, the jobs of people working in industries like IT, dock, textile will be more formal and the system will be more organized.
6. Official recognition of gig and platform workers: Gig and platform workers legally defined for the first time. Aggregators will have to contribute 1-2% of their earnings (capped at 5% of payments) to welfare and portable benefits linked to Aadhaar will be available in every state.
7. Health checkups and safety rules are necessary in risky industries: It will be mandatory for workers working in hazardous factories, plantations, contract labor and mines (who are more than the prescribed number) to undergo free health checkup every year. Along with this, the safety and health standards set by the government will have to be implemented, and it will also be mandatory to form a safety committee in big institutions, so that the safety of the workers can be continuously monitored.
8. Social security network in industries becomes bigger: The coverage of the Social Security Code will spread across the country, including MSME workers, single laborers in hazardous places, platform workers and sectors which were earlier left out of the mandatory ESI scheme.
9. Official Cover to Digital and Media Workers: Now journalists, freelancers, dubbing artists and people associated with the media will also come under the ambit of labor protection. This means that they will get appointment letters, their salaries will be on time and secure, and their working hours will be fixed and regulated.
10. Stronger Protection for Contract, Migrant and Unorganized Workers: Contract workers and workers from other cities will now get the same wages as permanent workers, government welfare schemes, and facilities that will continue even if they move from one place to another. Besides, it will be necessary for the company in which they work to provide them social security and will also have to provide basic facilities like drinking water, resting place and cleanliness.
