In a shocking incident, a Dalit youth was allegedly assaulted and urinated upon by four persons in Madhya Pradesh’s Katni district after opposing illegal mining, police said on Thursday.
The incident took place on October 14 in Matwara village, about 45 km from the district headquarters, under the jurisdiction of Bahoriband police station, news agency PTI reported.
According to officials, four accused, identified as Ramanuj Pandey, Ram Bihari Pandey, Pawan Pandey and Satish Pandey, were carrying out illegal mining near the victim, identified as Rajkumar Chaudhary’s farm to which he had opposed.
Chaudhary alleged Pawan Pandey, who is also the village sarpanch’s son, urinated on him, subjected him to casteist slurs and threatened to kill him if he approached police.
“Ramanuj Pandey, Ram Bihari Pandey, Pawan Pandey and Satish Pandey allegedly assaulted and insulted Rajkumar Chaudhary. All five are residents of Matwara village. A case was registered under SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act today,” Additional Superintendent of Police Santosh Deharia told the news agency.
The ASP further said that the four accused are on the run and efforts are being made to nab them.
The incident mirrors a similar case in Sidhi district in 2023, around 200 kilometres from Katni, where a tribal youth was also urinated upon. The case had hit national headlines and become a major issue during the assembly polls later that year.
