- 45 Bus Fire Incidents In India Over 3 Years | 64 Deaths Reported | Road Transport Ministry

There have been 45 incidents of fire in moving buses in the country in the last three years. A total of 64 people have died in these accidents. Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari gave this information in the Rajya Sabha on Thursday.
According to the ministry, the data from the Electronic Detailed Accident Report (EDAR) portal covers incidents for 2023, 2024 and 2025 (till December 10).
There were 11 incidents of bus fire in 2023, in which 1 person died. In 2024, 31 people lost their lives in 20 incidents. So far in 2025, 32 deaths have been recorded in 14 incidents. A total of 145 people have also been injured in these three years.
The government clarified that the bus accident that occurred on October 24, 2025 in Kurnool, Andhra Pradesh, in which 20 people died, is not included in these figures.
Government steps for bus safety
The ministry said that safety standards have been updated to prevent incidents like fire in buses. AIS-119 standards have been amended to make it mandatory for every bus to have a fire extinguisher and an additional emergency exit.
In addition, safety regulations related to the fuel system and electrical wiring have also been tightened.
The government is continuously giving instructions to the states so that safety equipment can be installed even in old vehicles and investigation reports of accidents should come out as soon as possible.

- There were 6 incidents of bus fire in Rajasthan in which 45 people lost their lives.
- There were 9 incidents of bus fire in Maharashtra which resulted in 1 death.
- There were 8 incidents of bus fire in Madhya Pradesh in which 1 death was recorded.
- There were 6 incidents of bus fire in Tamil Nadu in which 2 people died.
- There were 6 incidents of bus fire in Karnataka in which 1 died.
- There was one incident of bus fire in Haryana in which 10 people died.
- 2 killed in bus fire in Telangana, 2 dead
- 1 incident of bus fire in Andhra Pradesh in which 1 died
- 1 incident of bus fire in Odisha in which 1 died
The government reported a total of 6 incidents in Delhi, Assam, Gujarat. No death was recorded in these accidents.
