The incident took place at around 6 pm when Assam Rifles personnel were heading from Imphal towards Bishnupur.

Two jawans from Assam Rifles were killed and four injured when unidentified gunmen fired shots at their vehicle in Manipur’s Bishnupur district on Friday.

The incident took place at around 6 pm when a column of troops of the 33 Assam Rifles unit was heading towards Bishnupur on National Highway 2.

Assam Rifles personnel were heading from Imphal towards Bishnupur.

“In Nambol Sabal Leikai, the column was ambushed by unidentified terrorists on the Highway in the denotified area of Manipur. In the ensuing action, two personnel of Assam Rifles were martyred, and five were injured, who have since been evacuated to RIMS and are currently stable,” said the Defence PRO, Guwahati, in a statement.

No group has claimed responsibility for the ambush. Search operations are ongoing to eliminate the terrorists involved in the incident.

Former chief minister N Biren Singh visited the RIMS hospital to meet the injured personnel.
