Seventeen-year-old Ukrainian prodigy Roman Dehtiarov produced one of the most remarkable triumphs in modern chess by winning the European Individual Chess Championship in Katowice, Poland.

Entering the tournament as the 126th seed among 501 participants, the Ukrainian International Master defied all expectations to emerge as champion, becoming both the youngest and lowest-seeded player ever to claim the title.

How Roman Dehtiarov Made History?

Rated 2452 before the event, Dehtiarov finished with an impressive 9 points out of 11, edging out a powerful field that included top Grandmasters such as Nijat Abasov, Aydin Suleymanli, and Mahammad Muradli, all of whom scored 8.5 points. His defining moment came in the final round, where he defeated David Anton Guijarro to secure the championship outright.

The victory carried historic significance beyond the title itself. Dehtiarov became the first player ever to win the continental championship without already holding the Grandmaster title, earning the prestigious GM title instantly and bypassing the usual requirement of three norms and a 2500 rating. The triumph also brought him €20,000 in prize money and qualification for the 2027 FIDE World Cup.

Dehtiarov’s achievement resonated deeply in Ukraine, especially given the ongoing challenges facing the country. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy personally congratulated the teenager and honoured him with the ‘Future of Ukraine’ award.

In his post on social media, Zelenskyy wrote, “I met with Roman Dehtiarov, a 17-year-old chess player from Kharkiv. He became the first player in history to win the European Championship without holding the grandmaster title. I honoured Roman with the Future of Ukraine award.”

Reflecting on the young champion’s journey, he added, “We spoke about his path, training, and plans. He has been playing chess since the age of five and has already achieved major victories both in Ukraine and internationally. I congratulate him on this important victory and thank him for representing Ukraine on the international stage at such a high level. We are proud of you, Roman, and of all our people. Glory to Ukraine!”
