13-Year-Old Maharashtra Girl Dies After Being Forced To Do 100 Sit-Ups For Being Late

A 13-year-old girl from Vasai died a week after she was allegedly forced to perform 100 sit-ups with her schoolbag on her back for arriving ten minutes late to school. The incident occurred on November 8, when the girl and several other students who arrived late were punished by their class teacher. According to the family, she returned home complaining of sharp pain from her neck down her back and told her mother she was feeling unwell. Her condition worsened through the evening.

Her mother said the child struggled to move after the punishment and continued to complain of severe back pain.

A school official, Vikas Yadav, told The Times of India that the institution was willing to accept responsibility if the post-mortem confirms that the punishment directly led to her death. Vasai’s education officer, Pandurang Galange, said authorities were collecting all relevant information.

Local authorities have not yet confirmed the cause of death. Police have registered an accidental death report (ADR) and are awaiting the post-mortem findings.
