Mamata Banerjee had held a press conference at her residence in Kalighat on May 4, the day after her defeat in the assembly elections.

In West Bengal, Trinamool Congress (TMC) has faced disintegration for the first time after 28 years of party formation. 58 out of 80 rebel MLAs of TMC on Wednesday elected Ritabrata Banerjee as the leader of the legislative party in place of Mamata Banerjee. The speaker also approved this claim.

The whole game of rebellion started on May 22 with the meeting of TMC MLA Ritabrata Banerjee and Chief Minister Shubhendu Adhikari at Banga Bhawan in Delhi. This one meeting divided the party into two parts in just 13 days.

Amid the ongoing political crisis within TMC, many leaders considered close to Mamata attended the administrative review meeting of CM Shubhendu on Wednesday. These included Kolkata Mayor Firhad Hakim, Kunal Ghosh, Nayana Bandyopadhyay and Ashok Deb. This development has further exposed the ongoing tussle within the party.

Confusion over leaving the post of Kolkata Mayor, Hakim did not submit resignation

There was confusion on Wednesday over the resignation of TMC leader and Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) Mayor Firhad Hakim. Kunal Ghosh claimed that Mamata Banerjee has accepted his resignation, but Hakim did not submit his formal resignation till night.

KMC chairperson Mala Roy also said that she did not receive any resignation. According to sources, Hakim is now reconsidering his decision. It is being told that Hakim’s decision changed after attending the meeting chaired by CM Shubhendu.

Some party leaders had also raised questions on his presence in the meeting. Hakim is counted among the leaders closest to Mamata. He has been the Mayor of Kolkata since 2018 and has been among the prominent Muslim faces of TMC for a long time. He is the first Muslim mayor in the history of Kolkata Municipal Corporation after independence.

KMC directed to serve notice to Abhishek Banerjee’s relatives and company

Amid the political turmoil, Calcutta High Court directed KMC to issue a fresh notice to Abhishek Banerjee’s relative Amit Banerjee and Leaps and Bounds Company. The matter is related to the building in Kalighat, where Abhishek lives.

The court has ordered KMC to send a detailed notice within a week and the petitioners to respond within three weeks. Amit Banerjee and Leaps and Bounds had said in the High Court that the notices issued earlier were incomplete and did not provide clear information.

What next: Now Mamata will not get opposition status

Out of 80 Trinamool MLAs, 58 factions are separate. According to this, Mamta is left with 22 MLAs. Any faction or party must have at least 10% (30 out of 294 MLAs) to be recognized as an opposition party in the House. In the present situation, technically Mamata faction will not get the status of opposition.

Their group will sit on the opposition benches, but will have less privileges. Ritabrata is leading the dissatisfied camp. To avoid disqualification under the anti-defection law, the breakaway faction needed the support of at least two-thirds of 54 MLAs. The dissidents have 58, so the anti-defection law will not be applicable against them. There are also 17 Muslim MLAs from Malda-Murshidabad in this group.

In the last 10 years, five parties broke up in four big states of the country.

  • Shiv Sena and NCP in Maharashtra: Eknath Shinde rebelled in 2022. After getting the name ‘Shiv Sena’ and ‘bow and arrow’ from the Election Commission, he also became the Chief Minister. But today he is the Deputy Chief Minister. While Uddhav Thackeray is in opposition. Similarly, in 2023, Ajit Pawar rebelled against uncle Sharad Pawar. He was the Deputy Chief Minister with the original ‘NCP’ and ‘Clock’ symbol. Ajit is no more.
  • Samajwadi Party in Uttar Pradesh: In the ‘chacha-bhatija’ war in 2016-17, Akhilesh Yadav gained complete control over the party and the ‘cycle’ symbol. Shivpal Yadav has now returned to SP after forming a separate party.
  • LJP in Bihar: After the death of Ram Vilas Paswan in 2021, uncle Pashupati Paras removed Chirag. Chirag showed strength on the ground, today he is a minister in Modi cabinet, Paras group is marginalized.
  • AIADMK in Tamil Nadu: After Jayalalitha in 2017, E. Palaniswami and O. Panneerselvam clashed. Palaniswami won the legal battle and became the undisputed head of the party, while OPS is expelled.
