‘Meetha Mein Kya Hai’, a film based on family and relationships on Diwali, has been released on Netflix today, i.e. on 30th October. It is directed by Radhika Bansal. In conversation with Dainik Bhaskar, Radhika, Ayesha Raza Mishra, Rohini Hattangadi and Ritwik Bhowmik talked about the memories related to the film, characters and family. Radhika told that the idea of the film came from Christmas films. Rohini said that the actors had to live the characters in this film instead of playing them. Question: ‘What’s in sweets?’ What special will the audience get to see? Answer/Radhika Bansal: There is a lot of masala in the film. This is a bittersweet story, which has drama, humor, relationship complications and many surprises. It’s like a mix box. Question: How did the idea of making a film come about? Answer/Radhika: Our family watches movies like ‘Home Alone’ and ‘Love Actually’ every year on Christmas. I felt that there should be such a film on Diwali too, which the whole family can watch sitting together. Diwali is a festival of returning home and spending time with family. The story of the film proceeded with this idea. Question: How did you get such a great star cast in the first film? Answer/Radhika: This is my first film. I had never been to a film set before, so my expectations were low in the beginning. I wanted to build the story around the character of Nani. Rohini Hattangadi was my dream cast. I thought what’s the harm in asking? When he said yes, I thought maybe a good film would be made. Then Ayesha Raza Mishra and Ritwik Bhowmik also joined. The special thing is that no one refused the film. Question: Ayesha ji, how was the experience of working with director Radhika? Answer/Ayesha Raza Mishra: Radhika was very clear about her characters. Initially I found some instructions wrong, but when the scenes were shot I realized that they were right. As an actor, it was fun to understand the character and explore it in a new way. Mother-daughter, mother-son and other family relationships have been beautifully depicted in the film. Question: Rohini ji, what did you find so special in the film that you immediately said yes? Answer/Rohini Hattangadi: When Radhika narrated the story, it felt like it was going to be a small, beautiful family film. Instead of showing big emotional scenes, relationships have been presented in a simple manner. It is difficult to play such characters because instead of acting in them, one has to live them. Even after reading the script of the film, I felt that it would be a good experience. We shot the entire film in a month. Living and working together also created a family bond between the artists. Its effect will be visible on the screen also. The director had an understanding of his characters, so it was easy to work. Question: Ritwik, why did you say yes to the film? Answer/Ritvik Bhowmik: Talked to Radhika for the first time on video call. She sent some scenes and told what kind of film she wanted to make. There was truth and familiarity with the story in his words. Seeing his enthusiasm, I felt that I also want to be a part of this film. I am playing the character of Jai Aggarwal. He is the eldest son of the new generation of the family and is going through a special experience in his life. Through this character, I got an opportunity to understand grief and the emotions related to it in a new way. Question: Was there any such experience on the set, when a scene had to be shot again and again? Answer/Radhika: There was a long scene with a suitcase, in which one had to go to different places at night. He had to shoot several times. There were a lot of retakes due to lighting and scene requirements. Question: How much did you enjoy the sweets there while shooting in Lucknow? Answer/Rohini: Everyone liked Lucknow’s Rabri and Jalebi very much. Also ate sweets from places like Ram Asare and Chhappan Bhog. We had a lot of fun on the set. Question: Ritwik, what would you say to those who avoid eating sweets? Answer/Ritvik: I listen to my mind. When I feel like eating something sweet, I eat it. Will work hard in the gym later. But the enjoyment of eating is also important. One should especially eat favorite sweets on Diwali. Just eat carefully. Question: What message should remain in the mind of the audience after watching the film? Answer/Radhika: I want people to remember their family after watching the film. If they feel that they have not talked to their grandmother, uncle or any cousin for several days, then they should call them. If the film can inspire someone to reconnect with their family, that would be the greatest happiness for me. Question: Any special memory related to your grandmother, which inspired the film? Answer/Radhika: This film is dedicated to my grandmother and inspired by her. He died three months before shooting began. I was very sad that she couldn’t see the film. But I feel his blessings are always with me. I have many memories related to him, but even today I wish I had talked to him a little more and called him a little more. Question: Ayesha ji, any memory or story related to your grandparents? Answer/Ayesha: My maternal grandmother was a freedom fighter and communist, while my grandmother was a news reader. Both were working women. No one in my family was fond of cooking. I am probably the first woman in my family who cooks wholeheartedly. I learned cooking so that I could cook food of my son’s choice. Question: Rohini ji, which memory related to your grandparents is the most special? Answer/Rohini: I have never seen my grandmother. Nani lived with us for some time. My maternal home was in Vadodara and I loved going there. There used to be a swing in every room of the house. I also learned how to make tea from my grandmother. That is my first memory of learning to cook. Question: Ritwik, any special memory of your childhood spent with family? Answer/Ritvik: My grandparents lived in Kolkata, while I grew up sometimes in Bengaluru and sometimes in Mumbai. That’s why I couldn’t spend much time with him. However, I received a lot of love from every member of the family. I am the only boy in the family from both my mother and father’s side. That’s why I have received a lot of love from every generation. Question: Family squabbles and fights will be seen in the film. If such a situation arises in real life, what will you do? Answer/Ayesha Raza Mishra: If my neighbor has any problem, I start solving it. I was born to solve problems. I think problem solving is in the DNA of most Indian women. Even if a woman works in the house, people still go to her with their problems. Many times, whether women want it or not, they have to solve everyone’s issues. Till date I have not faced any such situation in which I can say that I am running away from it.
