Hrithik Roshan and Preity Zinta’s film ‘Mission Kashmir’, released in 2000, was a hit at the box office, but the story behind it is very interesting. Vidhu Vinod Chopra, the director and producer of this film, himself admitted that if this movie had flopped, his house would have been sold.

In fact, his previous film ‘Qarib’ had failed miserably, leaving him in debt of Rs 1 crore. In such a situation, ‘Mission Kashmir’ was the biggest bet of his career.
Hrithik’s fees were less than Preity Zinta’s
According to Suketu Mehta’s book ‘Maximum City’ (2004), very interesting rules were kept in the contract of the film. Hrithik Roshan’s fee was fixed at Rs 11 lakh, but if it flopped, he would have got only Rs 1 lakh. A bonus of Rs 10 lakh was promised if the film became a hit. At the same time, a payment of Rs 15 lakh was fixed for Preity Zinta, which could increase by Rs 10 lakh on success and would remain only Rs 1 lakh on failure.
Sanjay Dutt’s contract was even more risky. He would have received Rs 25 lakh only if the film recovered its costs, and if it had flopped, he would not have received a single penny. On success, he was to get an additional Rs 25 lakh as bonus.
Shahrukh and Amitabh were going to play the role
The role of Altaf in the film was first offered to Shahrukh Khan and the role of Inayat Khan to Amitabh Bachchan. But both of them left this film after signing ‘Mohabbatein’. After this Vidhu Vinod Chopra cast Hrithik Roshan and Sanjay Dutt.

‘Kaho Na Pyaar Hai’ changed the equations
During the shooting itself, Hrithik’s debut film ‘Kaho Na Pyaar Hai’ was released and proved to be a superhit. His star value increased overnight. After this, changes were made in the contract of ‘Mission Kashmir’, because now the film with Hrithik’s name was expected to get huge profits.
Loan taken out after doing business worth Rs. 37 crores
According to the report of Bollywood Hungama, ‘Mission Kashmir’ had collected around Rs 37 crore worldwide. Not only did the film prove to be a hit, but Vidhu Vinod Chopra’s debt was also cleared.
