The 5 major peaks of the Himalayas located in Pithoragarh, Uttarakhand, which were covered with white sheets of snow throughout the year, have now started turning black. The effect of global warming has increased so much that Panchachuli, located in the Himalayan range, situated at an altitude of 6,334 meters to 6,904 meters above sea level.

Snow is visible only on the top of the main peak of Panchachuli. The snow of four other peaks has melted. Apart from this, the peaks of the Himalayan region up to Nepal are also appearing black. Environment lovers and tourists are disappointed by this. This change in the white glowing peaks not only indicates the crisis of Uttarakhand’s mountainous beauty, but also a deep climate crisis.
For many years, snowfall has not been occurring on time in the Himalayas due to changes in the weather cycle. These peaks, which are covered in white sheets from October to January, experience snowfall from the last week of February to April. Due to which the ice is not able to freeze.

When the snow melts in April, they go to the higher Himalayan regions with their animals. Earlier, these families used to return after farming there by the last week of October. Due to delayed snowfall in the last few years, the migration period has also increased. Now many families of Darma, Vyas of Dharchula and Malla Johar of Munsiyari are returning to the valleys in the last week of November.
Damage caused by climate change
Dr. Indra Dutt Bhatt said that lack of adequate rain and snowfall will also increase the threat to the existence of local vegetation, which will lead to biodiversity loss and invasive species can take their place.
Regarding dealing with this, Bhatt said-
Many initiatives are underway to stabilize the temperature of the Himalayan regions. The Government of India is working under the Green India Mission, while the Uttarakhand Government, Forest Department and Forest Panchayats are contributing in controlling the earth’s temperature by planting trees on a large scale.
He also said that it is extremely important to limit the earth’s temperature at the global level. To keep the eco system safe, people will have to change their lifestyle in accordance with nature and it is necessary to make this effort not only at the local level but at the global level.
