Before the Bangladesh elections, in May 2023, US Assistant Secretary of State Donald Lu and US Ambassador to Bangladesh Peter Haas met the Bangladeshi ambassador for a lunch meeting. During this meeting, they warned the Bangladeshi ambassador that if free elections are not held in Bangladesh, then preparations are being made to ban American visas of those responsible for it.
Sheikh Hasina had hinted about the US pressure on her during her election campaign. According to intelligence reports, the leaders of Bangladesh’s main opposition party BNP were in contact with the US intelligence agency CIA. But Hasina succeeded in holding and winning the elections. After this, work on the coup began rapidly.

October 2023: Campaign launched against Hasina calling her an ‘Indian agent’
Even before the elections in Bangladesh in October 2023, workers of opposition parties have been calling her an ‘Indian agent’. This campaign was being given two colors. First – India has kept Bangladesh as its colony. Sheikh Hasina is an Indian agent, who has sold the country to India to save her throne.
In April 2024, the Sheikh Hasina government conducted an internal survey. According to this, her popularity saw a decline of 10-15% after the elections. The campaign had started showing its effect. These were the initial trends of the coup in Bangladesh, but the plan had started much before this.
March 2024: US ambassador visits Thailand, meanwhile arms are delivered to KNF
On 8 March 2024, two months after the formation of the new government in Bangladesh on 6 January 2024, US Ambassador to Bangladesh Peter Haas left Bangladesh for Singapore. From there he went to the US via Thailand and returned 17 days later on 26 March 2024.
During this time, after officially spending a few days’ holiday in Thailand, he went to Washington. An intelligence report of 117 to 119 pages was presented in the US. It contained details of the ‘human rights violations’ and ‘democratic rights violations’ going on in Bangladesh, which was to be presented to the US State Department and the US Congress.
According to intelligence reports, in March itself, a shipment of modern weapons reached KNF insurgents in the Chittagong Hills of Bangladesh via Thailand via Myanmar. In April, the KNF started terrorist activities in the Chittagong Hill Tracks.
On 2 April 2024, KNF looted Sonali Bank in Room Upazila, Bangladesh. The next day, KNF insurgents tried to loot Sonali Bank and Krishi Bank branches in Thanchi Upazila and seized 15 weapons from the police.
Peace talks were going on between the Bangladesh government and KNF since May 2023. The second round of peace talks was held in March 2024. A few days later, KNF again took up arms against the Bangladesh government. According to sources, Pakistani intelligence agency ISI and US intelligence agency CIA together planned the second part of the coup plot.
June 2024: Hasina appoints her trusted minister as Army Chief to prevent coup
Hasina appointed her trusted Waqar-u-Jama as the Army Chief in June 2024 to prevent a possible coup, but her move proved insufficient. An intelligence source monitoring Bangladesh told Bhaskar that the demonstration was strategically turned violent at a time when the Bangladesh Army had the least chance of mobilizing.
At the end of July, half of Bangladesh is often in the grip of floods. The Bangladesh Army has its 17th division in Sylhet and its 19th division in Mymensingh. Apart from this, the Army has its 7th division in Barisal. Due to floods in these three places, the Army could not call its soldiers to Dhaka even if it wanted to.
Apart from this, the army has its 11th division in Rajshahi and 66th division in Rangpur, but the first incidents of violence started from these areas. Due to this, very limited number of soldiers could be called to Dhaka from here. The army had only two operational divisions left during the protests.
One is 55 division located in Khulna and the other is 9 division near Dhaka. It was a difficult task to stop the protesters through these two divisions. Intelligence sources say, apart from the small number of soldiers, Bangladesh Army had another challenge. There is a lot of politicization in the Bangladesh Army. Especially in the lower ranks, a large section is inclined towards Jamaat-e-Islami.
If the Bangladesh Army had ordered to fire on the protesting students, there was a danger of rebellion in the army. In such a situation, the army thought it best to do nothing. Then in July 2024, Pakistan’s intelligence agency ISI started infiltrating its men in the student protests through Jamaat-e-Islami. After this, these protests started becoming violent.
