The last rites of Hamas chief Haniyeh, who was killed in an Israeli strike on Wednesday, will be performed in Tehran today. Haniyeh’s body will be kept for public viewing here. The Hamas chief will be officially given a final farewell in front of the public.

Iran’s Supreme Leader Khamenei will hold an Islamic prayer service near Haniyeh’s body. In Iran, this is usually held for the most senior commanders and officers. The event will be held at a university in Tehran.

After this, Haniyeh’s body will be taken to Qatar’s capital Doha today itself, where the Hamas chief will be buried tomorrow.

Hamas chief Haniyeh killed in rocket attack
On Wednesday evening, Hamas spokesman Khalil al-Hayya gave the official statement on Haniyeh’s death. In this statement, Khalil said that the room in which Haniyeh was staying was directly targeted by a rocket.

Earlier, Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps said on Wednesday morning that Haniyeh’s residence in Tehran was hit by a missile, killing Haniyeh and one of his bodyguards.

Khamenei said – we will take revenge for the murder of Hamas chief
Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei has blamed Israel for Haniyeh’s murder. He said that Israel has created trouble for itself by attacking. Haniyeh has been killed on Iranian soil. He was our guest and hence it is our duty to avenge his death.

Apart from the Supreme Leader, Iran’s President Masoud Pazshkian also threatened Israel. After Haniyeh’s death, Pazshkian said, “We will force them to regret this attack. Iran will definitely protect its sovereignty and dignity.”

On Tuesday, Hamas chief Haniyeh met Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei at his residence.

China-Russia condemned the attack
Reactions came from countries around the world over the killing of the Hamas chief. China condemned the attack and said that we oppose the death of Haniyeh. This incident can further increase tensions in the region.

In his statement regarding the murder, Russia’s deputy foreign minister said that this is a political murder and it cannot be accepted. This can increase tensions in the Middle East.

Ismail Haniyeh was operating from Qatar till now. After the murder, Qatar said in a statement that “This is a heinous crime, which can further increase tension in the region. Israel is continuously targeting civilians in Gaza, which is spreading chaos in the entire region.”

Who was Hamas chief Haniyeh
Haniyeh was the political chief of Hamas. He had been the chief political leader of Hamas since 2017. The Shura Council, the highest decision-making body in Hamas, re-elected him for four years in 2021. There was no one else to challenge him in the organization, so he was elected unopposed. Haniyeh joined Hamas in 1987.
