A major train accident occurred in the southern part of Spain on Sunday. A high-speed train in the Andalusia region derailed, went onto the tracks in the opposite direction and collided with another train coming from the opposite direction. According to officials, at least 20 people died in the accident, while 73 passengers were injured. An evening high-speed train going from Málaga to Madrid derailed near Cordoba and collided with another train going from Madrid to Huelva, according to Spain’s rail operator ADIF. According to media reports, there were about 500 passengers in both the trains. Andalusia’s regional health minister, Antonio Saenz, said officials feared the death toll could exceed 20. He said relief and rescue operations are continuing and 73 injured have been admitted to six different hospitals. 4 coaches derailed, one coach fell into a 4 meter deep slope. According to Sainj, at least one coach fell into a four meter deep slope in the accident. Cordoba fire brigade chief Francisco Carmona told Spain’s national radio RNE that a train was badly damaged and at least four of its carriages derailed. Train services closed between Madrid and Andalusia ADIF said that train services will not run between Madrid and the cities of Andalusia on Monday. Regional Civil Protection chief Maria Belen Moya Rojas said the accident occurred in an area that is difficult to reach, making the rescue operation challenging. Emergency relief units of the Spanish Army have also been included in the rescue operation. Red Cross teams are helping health officials in treating the injured. Local people reached the spot with blankets and water to help the victims. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen expressed sadness at the terrible news coming from Cordoba in a post on social media platform X.
