A lawyer had filed 5 Public Interest Litigation (PIL) in the Supreme Court. One of these said that research was demanded to find out whether onion and garlic contain vengeful or negative energy. While hearing this on Monday, Chief Justice of India (CJI) Surya Kant reprimanded Advocate Sachin Gupta. CJI asked- Do you draft all these petitions at midnight? The bench of CJI and Justice Joymalya Bagchi rejected all the five PILs of the lawyer as vague, frivolous and baseless. The petitioner responded that this is a common issue and claimed that a divorce had allegedly taken place in Gujarat over the use of onion in food. CJI said – You want to hurt the sentiments of the Jain community. In the petition related to onion and garlic, there was mention of the eating habits of the Jain community, who traditionally avoid onion, garlic and root vegetables considering them as tamasic food. CJI asked Gupta, “Why do you want to hurt the sentiments of Jain community?” Also read: Supreme Court said that it has a direct impact on the justice process.
