Supreme Court Chief Justice Bhushan R Gavai on Monday recommended the Central Government to appoint senior judge Justice Surya Kant as his successor. His name has been sent to the Union Law Ministry for approval. With this, the process of appointing the 53rd CJI in the Supreme Court has started.
The tradition is that the sitting CJI recommends the name of his successor only when he is requested to do so by the Law Ministry. The tenure of current CJI Gavai ends on November 23.
After him, Justice Surya Kant will take oath as CJI on 24 November. He will retire on 9 February 2027. His tenure will be about 14 months.
