Director Sunil Pandey and music composer Ram Sampat had a special conversation with Dainik Bhaskar about the film ‘Ek Din’. Both of them told that this film is not just a project for them, but an emotional journey. According to Sunil, he believed in the truth of the story rather than trends, while Ram Sampath called it a milestone of his career.
He said that truth and hard work are most important to work with Aamir Khan. The film has been produced by Aamir Khan, while Junaid Khan and Sai Pallavi are in lead roles.
Question: Sunil, what is the film ‘Ek Din’ for you?
Answer/ Sunil Pandey: ‘Ek Din’ is not just a film for me, but a feeling. It is a feeling that is difficult to fully describe in words. From the moment I read this story for the first time, it stuck with me. This film is very close to my heart and is a very big thing for me. I don’t just look at it as a story or a project, but as an experience.
Question: Ram, what does ‘Ek Din’ mean to you?
Answer/ Ram Sampat: For me ‘Ek Din’ is a special journey and an important milestone. For the first time in my career, I have worked on a love story, so its importance increases.
Music composer Ram Sampath and director Sunil Pandey shared their experiences regarding the film ‘Ek Din’.
Question: What did you achieve as a composer from this film?
Answer/ Ram Sampat: Every musician dreams of getting a chance to work on a beautiful love story. I got that opportunity in this film and I fulfilled many of my wishes. The great composers of our country like Pancham Da, Madan Mohan or Naushad Sahab are recognized by the music of their love stories. Similarly, ‘Ek Din’ is like a milestone for me, where I openly expressed many of the musical feelings within me.
Question: Sunil, in today’s action and masala era, was it not a risk to show such a soft and innocent character?
Answer/ Sunil Pandey: Look, the most important thing for me is the truth of the story. When I read the script, I found the story very honest and beautiful. At that time I did not think about what is the trend going on these days or what the audience likes to watch more.
Question: Did you ignore the market trend at all?
Answer/ Sunil Pandey: Yes, absolutely. While making the film, my entire focus was on whether I was able to bring the story that I liked on paper to the screen with the same honesty or not. Trends keep changing, but a good story always makes an impact.
Question: Why was Junaid chosen for this role?
Answer/ Sunil Pandey: Junaid fitted perfectly into this character. He has the same simplicity and innocence which was needed for this character. There was a genuineness and honesty in the way he performed, and that was most important for me.
Question: Ram, how did the music of the film become so emotional and effective even in silence?
Answer/ Ram Sampat: Whenever we make music, we first understand the script. Our aim is that the music should seem connected to the story, not separate from it. If the music goes along with the screenplay, only then it reaches the heart.
Question: How was the process of preparing the songs?
Answer/ Ram Sampat: We worked very hard on every song. Made several versions of each song, tried different tunes and ideas. After that we sat down and decided which song sounded best. It was a long but very satisfying process.

Question: How was the experience of working with Irshad Kamil?
Answer/ Ram Sampat: Working with a lyricist like Irshad Kamil is very special. They give words to those feelings which we cannot express directly. There is both depth and simplicity in the lines written by him, which makes the music of this film stronger.
Question: How challenging is it to create memorable and heartfelt music like the 90s in today’s era?
Answer/ Ram Sampat: To be honest, we don’t think much about trends. Nowadays a lot of music is made according to trends and styles, but we believe in music with honesty and soul.
Question: Why was simplicity kept in the music of the film?
Answer/ Ram Sampat: We deliberately kept the music simple, so that the story and emotions come across clearly. Many times it happened that I used to add some musical element and Sunil used to remove it. What ended up being a very simple but deep piece of music, like with just a piano or guitar.
Question: Sunil, how was the experience of working with Ram?
Answer/ Sunil Pandey: Ram is not only an excellent musician but also a brilliant storyteller. I never told them what kind of music I wanted. I just talked about the story, characters and situation, and he put it into music in his own way. This understanding of his makes the music of this film special.
Question: How does coordination work between you two?
Answer/ Ram Sampat: We understand each other’s likes and way of working. Like Sunil listens to different types of music at different times. He likes to listen to some songs at night, some during the day. By understanding these small things we are able to make music better.

Question: How easy or difficult is it to work with Aamir Khan?
Answer/ Sunil Pandey: He is very understanding and cooperative. If you present your point correctly and it has substance, then they definitely listen and agree.
Question: Ram, what was your real experience of working with Aamir?
Answer/ Ram Sampat: If you are hardworking and work honestly, it is very easy to work with them. But if you try to take shortcuts, they catch on immediately. Truthfulness and hard work are most important to work with them.
