Jharkhand, the eastern state of India, came into existence in the year 2000 and now when it is completing its 24th year, once again the politics here is going through the same phase for which Jharkhand has been famous. In the last 24 years, the state has seen many Chief Ministers with very short tenures. This trend started with the formation of the state and then it became evident that ‘Jharkhand is a politically unstable state.’
Today we are talking about this instability because the latest scenario is related to this. It so happened that last July Jharkhand CM Champai Soren resigned. His becoming CM was also a surprising development, in which when the then CM Hemant Soren was sent to jail, he handed over the CM chair to Champai Soren. CM Soren had to surrender due to allegations of corruption in the mining case.
When Hemant Soren came out after about five months, he returned to power and Champai Soren had to resign, Hemant Soren once again became the CM, but since then the news of Champai Soren’s rebellious attitude was in the headlines. Let’s take a look at what happened and when in this sequence of events of Hemant Soren going to jail, Champai Soren becoming the CM, then resigning and now adopting a rebellious attitude.
CM Soren arrested, sent to jail (31 January 2024)
The story begins from January 31, 2024. Jharkhand CM Hemant Soren was questioned for a long time by the ED in a money laundering case related to mining and then arrested. Before his arrest, Hemant Soren resigned from his post. Champai Soren was chosen as the new leader by the JMM-Congress and RJD alliance. The support related to this was also submitted to the Governor by the ruling party. After this, Champai Soren became the CM as per the process.
Champai Soren took oath as CM (2 February 2024)
Champai Soren took oath as the Chief Minister of Jharkhand on Friday afternoon, 2 February 2024, two days after the arrest of Hemant Soren by the ED in the money laundering case. After this, he also got the majority vote and thus the JMM government in Jharkhand was saved from falling. The arrest of Hemant Soren did not affect the government.

Hemant Soren gets bail, released from jail (28 June 2024)
June 28 brought relief news for former Chief Minister Hemant Soren. He got bail from the state High Court in the land scam case and was also released. He came out of jail by evening. Hemant Soren was in jail for five months. During the hearing on June 13, after the arguments were completed by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) and the defense, the High Court reserved the decision, on which the decision came out on June 28.
What did former CM Champai Soren say on the release of Hemant Soren?
While talking to the media, Champai Soren, who was the CM then, said, “We have been saying from the beginning that Hemant Babu’s name was not mentioned anywhere in the account book of the land scam that was being alleged. We had full faith in the court that justice will be done to Hemant Babu.” He was asked whether you will get strength in the assembly elections after Hemant Soren comes out? In response, he said, “Earlier also we got the mandate in his name. In 2019 also we fought in his name. In this general election also we fought in his name. He is the working president of our party. He was strong even when he was inside, now he will be stronger when he comes out.”

…but Champai Soren’s CM chair is in danger (3 July 2024)
On this day, for the first time, news came from sources that Hemant Soren is ready to occupy the CM chair again after his release and Champai Soren will resign. A party source had informed the media that ‘the alliance leaders and MLAs had unanimously decided to elect Hemant Soren as the leader of the JMM Legislative Party during a meeting at the residence of Chief Minister Champai Soren in Ranchi. In the meeting, it was decided to replace Champai Soren with Hemant Soren.’
Champai Soren resigned at 8 pm on the same day
According to sources, it was reported that CM Champai Soren will resign on July 3 at around 8 pm. Along with this, he had asked all the MLAs and ministers of the Jharkhand alliance to be ready to go to the Raj Bhavan at 7 pm. This news was also confirmed in the evening. Champai Soren resigned from the post of Chief Minister. At the same time, it was also decided that Hemant Soren would become the next CM in his place. Champai Soren thus remained the Chief Minister for 153 days.
What did Champai Soren say immediately after his resignation?
After submitting his resignation from the post of Chief Minister to the Governor, Champai Soren gave his first reaction. Talking to the media after coming out of the Raj Bhavan, he said, ‘I was made the Chief Minister due to political circumstances in the past. But after Hemant Soren came out of jail, our alliance has decided that he will become the Chief Minister again.’
Speculation of Champai Soren being angry (July 4, 2024)
Champai Soren resigned, there were speculations about him being angry. From social media to news, such claims were made citing sources that Champai Soren has become angry, although there was no official confirmation from his side. But today, from the events of 18 August, it is clear that this leader of Kolhan region had become angry with the party JMM and CM Hemant Soren since July 3, although Champai Soren himself had never clearly accepted this till now.

Speculations about joining BJP started (16 August 2024)
Political turmoil suddenly intensified in Jharkhand on Friday. News emerged that former CM Champai Soren is about to rebel against Hemant Soren and the party. He has arrived in Delhi to meet the BJP top leadership. Just before the assembly elections in Jharkhand, there were speculations about former CM and JMM leader Champai Soren joining the BJP.
What did Champai Soren say on the speculations (Friday 16 August 2024)
Amidst these discussions, when he was asked about this on Friday, he himself answered. Champai Soren smiled at the question of the journalists and said, “You people are asking such a question, but what should I say on this, we are in front of you.” After saying this, he sat in the car. Let us tell you that, after Hemant Soren returned from jail, Champai Soren had to resign from the post of CM. Since then, there has been a discussion about him being angry.
Champai Soren spoke to BJP leaders over the phone! (Saturday 17 August 2024)
According to sources, Champai reached Kolkata on Saturday and then Delhi on Sunday afternoon. It is believed that he had a phone conversation with some senior BJP leaders and a face-to-face meeting may also take place soon. Champai Soren plans to stay in Delhi for three days. Apart from Champai Soren, there is talk of 5-6 more JMM MLAs also being in touch with BJP separately.
Champai removes JMM from X’s bio (Sunday 18 August 2024)
There were many speculations after JMM leader and former Jharkhand Chief Minister Champai Soren came to Delhi on Sunday. Meanwhile, Champai Soren has removed the name of his party Jharkhand Mukti Morcha from the bio of his social media platform X. Now only Jharkhand former CM is written on Champai Soren’s new bio.
Champai Soren openly came out against JMM (Sunday 18 August 2024)
Champai Soren, a four-decade-old commander and lieutenant of Jharkhand Mukti Morcha, has become disillusioned with his own party. Accusing JMM of insulting him, he has made clear his intention to part ways. Soren has said that all his options are open for choosing his future partner.
He alleges that he was humiliated and ousted from power. All his rights were frozen by his own party and people close to Hemant Soren. An order to resign was passed by calling a meeting of the legislative party without telling the agenda. He was banned from attending all the programs for three days. So he had decided that he would either retire, or form a parallel organization or choose a partner to walk with him. That is, he has made an informal announcement of leaving the party.

How much impact will Champai Soren’s departure have on the health of the government?
However, his departure does not seem to affect the health of the government at the moment. In Jharkhand, 8 seats are vacant in the 81-seat assembly, while JMM has 26, Congress has 16 and RJD has one MLA. CPIML MLA Vinod Singh is also in the ruling party. The figure of 37 is the majority number. Here BJP has 23, AJSU has 3, NCP has 1, and 2 independents are also in the NDA camp. That is, there is no threat to the Hemant government at the moment.
BJP has been continuously praising Champai Soren
However, BJP has been continuously praising Champai. It has also been saying that JMM has treated him very badly. He was thrown out like a fly from milk, it is clear that BJP wants to create this narrative in the assembly elections that even tribal leaders are insulted in JMM, so in the name of which tribal identity does the party ask for votes. How can the one who could not be loyal to a decades-old loyalist like Champai Soren, be loyal to the common people.
Here Hemant Soren has also hit back
Hemant Soren has indirectly targeted Champai and BJP and said that the house and party are being broken with the power of money. Very soon the election bell is going to ring in the state. Our opponent BJP has the bell of when these elections will be held. Election Commission is no longer a constitutional institution. It has now become an institution of BJP. We challenge them and say that hold elections today, tomorrow they will have to be sent to Gujarat after sweeping and mopping.
These people bring people from Gujarat, Assam, Maharashtra to spread poison among the tribals, Dalits, backward castes and minorities and make them fight with each other. Leave aside the society, these people work to break families and parties. They buy this MLA or that MLA every other day, and money is such a thing that it doesn’t take long for the leaders to move here and there, no problem. Our India Alliance government has been standing among the people since 2019.
Party spokesperson Manoj Pandey said that Champai Soren was either insulted or honoured. He was given the CM’s chair in adverse circumstances, yet he got misled by the BJP’s ploy. What could be a bigger honour than the fact that the party showed faith in him alone among so many MLAs.
JMM has been accusing BJP
JMM has been repeatedly saying these things among the public that BJP has always been trying to destabilize the government here. It has been trying to gain power through outside leaders and by using central agencies. JMM’s morale is also high because Hemant Soren, who has been in jail for 5 months in ED’s money laundering case, has been granted bail by the High Court saying that there is no concrete evidence against him.
He has also got relief from the Supreme Court. If Champai joins BJP, JMM will seek votes and sympathy from the public on those issues. Earlier, when Hemant was in jail, BJP lost 5 Lok Sabha seats reserved for tribals in the state in the Lok Sabha elections. It is believed that JMM will once again mobilize the tribals on these grounds. There are 28 tribal seats in the assembly here. Out of these, BJP lost 26 seats in 2019.
BJP was continuously wooing Champai
Obviously Champai Soren, who has been an old and big leader, is being said to have been lured by the BJP ever since he was ousted from power. JMM alleges that BJP is a party that creates divisions in both the family and the party. It is also being claimed that Himanta Biswa Sarma is in touch with BJP’s election in-charge and co-election in-charge Shivraj Singh Chauhan. However, no BJP leader is saying anything openly. BJP spokesperson Pratul Shahdev said that Champai Soren’s post has made it clear that dictatorship prevails in JMM. It has become clear that JMM will not tolerate any tribal from the family other than Shibu Soren.
