Now Karnataka CM Siddaramaiah’s statement has also come regarding the issue of freebies schemes. He admitted that the 5 guarantees in Karnataka were putting a burden on his state’s treasury, but clarified that the 5 guarantees would not be discontinued. This will last for 5 years.
In an interview given to a private channel, Siddaramaiah said- Modi himself had given a statement in Rajasthan that if these guarantees were implemented, the Karnataka government would go bankrupt and there would be no money for development works. We came to power in May 2023 and we have implemented all the guarantee schemes. This is putting a burden on the state exchequer, but we are managing without stopping the development works and we are meeting all the expenses.
In fact, Kharge had said on October 31 during the Maharashtra Assembly elections that parties should make only those promises before the elections which can be fulfilled. Regarding this statement, PM Modi had said that all the state governments of Congress including Karnataka are not fulfilling their promises.
Siddaramaiah said – Kharge’s statement was misinterpreted
Siddaramaiah said in the interview that BJP misinterpreted Kharge’s statement given on October 31. The BJP had accused us that the governments of Congress-ruled Himachal Pradesh and Telangana were unable to pay salaries to government officials because of these guaranteed development schemes.
This allegation is baseless. Salaries are being paid to government officials in all the states. Sukhwinder Sukhu, Revanth Reddy and DK Shivakumar also told this in the press conference held in Mumbai on 9 November.
Congress-BJP face to face from 10th on election promises
October 31: Kharge said- Those promises should be made which can be fulfilled.
At an event in Bengaluru, Kharge said – We should make those promises which can be fulfilled. Otherwise the coming generation will be left with nothing but infamy. I have told Maharashtra Congress that we should not announce 5,6, 10 guarantees. We should do it on a budget basis.

Know what is the freebies issue, SC has also sent notice A hearing was held in the Supreme Court on October 14 on the promises of free schemes before the elections by political parties. The bench of CJI DY Chandrachud, Justice JB Pardiwala and Justice Manoj Mishra had issued notice to the Central Government and the Election Commission.
Shashank J Sridhar of Karnataka has sought to declare the promises of free schemes made by political parties during elections as bribes. It has also been demanded from the Supreme Court that the Election Commission should immediately stop such schemes. The court merged today’s petition with the old petitions for hearing.
The petitioner said, ‘Political parties do not tell how they will complete such schemes. This puts an incalculable burden on the government treasury. This is a fraud with the voters and the Constitution. Therefore, immediate and effective action should be taken to stop this.

October 2024: Petitioner Shashank J Sridhar said – Freebies should be considered bribes. Petitioner Shashank J Sridhar’s lawyer Balaji Srinivasan had raised the matter before the bench of CJI DY Chandrachud on Monday (October 14). He said that political parties promising free schemes during assembly or general elections should be considered as bribery or inducement for votes under the Representation of the People Act, 1951.
January 2022: BJP leader Ashwini Upadhyay filed a PIL BJP leader Ashwini Upadhyay had reached the Supreme Court with a PIL against freebies. In his petition, Upadhyay appealed to stop promises of freebies or free gifts by political parties to voters during elections. It has been demanded that the Election Commission should cancel the recognition of such parties.
What has happened in the Supreme Court so far? The hearing of the freebies case was started in August 2022 by a three-member bench led by former Chief Justice NV Ramana. Justice JK Maheshwari and Justice Hima Kohli were also there in this bench. Later, the then Chief Justice UU Lalit heard the case and now CJI DY Chandrachud is hearing the case.

Election Commission had said – You decide the definition of free schemes. do During the hearing in the Supreme Court on August 11, the Election Commission had said that it is not within the power of the Election Commission to regulate the policy adopted by the parties on freebies.
It is a policy decision of political parties to promise freebies before elections or to give them after elections. Taking any action without making rules in this regard would be abusing the powers of the Election Commission. Only the court should decide what are free schemes and what are not. After this we will implement it.
