Amidst the habit of smartphones and reels, the Singapore government is paying people to read books. The government has launched a 5-year National Reading Mission. Under this, people will have to read for at least 15 minutes every day. You will get points in exchange for recording your study time on the government website. Cash reward will be given on the basis of these points. The aim of the government is to inculcate the habit of reading books among the people again. Due to continuous use of phone and watching short videos, people are unable to concentrate on any book or article for a long time. The government wants to change this habit. You will get 20 coins for reading for 15 minutes. In this scheme, you will get 20 virtual coins for reading for at least 15 minutes every day. Study time can be recorded only once in a day. If a person reads for 15 minutes every day for 50 days, his 1,000 coins will be completed. In return he will get 1 Singapore dollar i.e. about 76 rupees. This year the government has set a total target of 75 lakh reading minutes. To encourage people, rewards worth Rs 1.14 crore will be given. The government made reading like a game. The National Library Board (NLB) of Singapore has made a game-like reward system in this scheme. People will be able to register their daily study time on the ‘Crowdtask SG’ website. The more the stipulated time is completed, the more coins you will get. You will get cash reward for collecting coins. The government wants the habit of reading books instead of reels. The government wants people to spend some time in reading books instead of continuously watching reels and short videos on the phone. According to Melissa Tam, head of the National Library Board, short videos provide information quickly, but watching a lot of information continuously can tire the brain. At the same time, reading books and long articles can improve the ability to concentrate, think and imagine. Therefore, the government has set a target of only 15 minutes daily for the beginning. Young people are also studying just for the sake of studies. According to research analyst Isaac Neo, children and youth are under pressure of studies and examinations. In such a situation, they often study only for the exam. The habit of reading books for mental happiness is decreasing. Neo started the Modern Men’s Book Club in 2025 for this reason. Its objective was to reconnect the youth with books. Can paying money to study become a habit? Experts have different opinions regarding this scheme. According to psychologist Charissa Ng, a monetary reward can motivate people who already have some interest to read. But for those who have no interest in reading books at all, money alone cannot make reading a habit for a long time. At the same time, book experts say that even a small reward can be useful to get you started. It is possible that a person may first start reading a book for money and later develop interest in reading it himself. That is, the purpose of Singapore’s scheme is not just to give Rs 76, but to get people away from phones for 15 minutes every day and reach books. —————————
