In the year 1955, the shooting of the film ‘Azad’ was going on in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu. Meanwhile, film producer S.S. Vasan introduced Dilip Kumar to a famous astrologer. The astrologer looked at Dilip Kumar’s face, read the lines on his hands and then prepared his horoscope. After this he made such a prediction, hearing which even Dilip Kumar himself was surprised. The astrologer said that Dilip Kumar will get married after the age of 40. His bride will be about half his age. Not only this, she will also be associated with films. The prophecy did not end here. The astrologer also said that the woman would also suffer from a serious illness. Hearing this, Dilip Kumar had said, “I will never marry a film girl.” At that time, Dilip Kumar did not take this prediction seriously, but after about 11 years, almost everything said by the astrologer came true. In 1966, 44 year old Dilip Kumar married 22 year old actress Saira Banu. Today, on Saira Banu’s 82nd birthday, let us know some unheard stories of her life and her love story with Dilip Kumar. Saira Banu, who started learning Urdu due to Dilip Kumar, was born in 1944 to famous actress Naseem Bano and producer Mian Ehsaan-ul-Haq. Saira’s mother Naseem Bano used to tell her that if she wanted to become Dilip Kumar’s wife, then first she would have to understand his likes, dislikes and hobbies. What happened next, Saira also started learning the things of Dilip Sahab’s choice. When she came to know that Dilip Kumar was very fond of Urdu and poetry, Saira started studying Urdu regularly from Maulvi Sahib. He started shooting for ‘Junglee’ during school holidays. After shooting for a few months, she went back to London and started completing her studies. But from the shooting of the film till its release, some such incidents happened which made Saira cry. Actually, Saira Banu had signed the film ‘Junglee’, but she had no acting experience. She reached Shalimar Bagh in Kashmir on the first day of shooting. Thousands of people had gathered there to watch the shooting. Saira was anyway quite shy. She had to lip-sync a line from the song ‘Kashmir Ki Kali’, but she was making mistakes again and again. If you paid attention to lip-sync, you would have turned in the wrong direction. If you had paid attention to walking, you would have missed the line of the song. After several retakes, Shammi Kapoor scolded him and said that if work has to be done, then do it properly. Hearing this, Saira became very embarrassed and started crying. Her sister also said that there is still time, if you want you can leave acting and go back, but Saira did not give up. He did the same scene again and this time he did it absolutely right. But before the release, another incident troubled Saira. One day she had gone to a shop in Mumbai with her mother. Meanwhile, Saira’s eyes fell on Dilip Kumar. Naseem Bano had specially invited him to the party. Dilip Sahab had reached Mumbai by flight from Madras to attend Saira’s birthday. Dilip Kumar has mentioned this evening in his autobiography. He had told that Saira was looking very beautiful in saree that day. Seeing her, for the first time Dilip Sahab realized that whom he had considered a little girl till now, she has now become a beautiful and confident young woman. Both of them shook hands. This was the moment when a new feeling about Saira arose in Dilip Kumar’s heart. The party ended and Dilip Sahab returned to Madras, but now Saira was not coming out of his mind. In this way the closeness between the two started increasing. The romance lasted for eight days, then she directly asked for her mother’s hand. For Saira Banu, it was no less than a film story. Dilip Kumar, whom she had loved since childhood, had now come close to her life. While talking to Dainik Bhaskar, Saira had told that Dilip Kumar used to come to Mumbai from Madras. He would have dinner at Saira’s house and then leave for his shooting. This series of meetings between the two continued for about eight days. Then one day Dilip Kumar took a step which Saira had probably never imagined. He went to their mother and grandmother and told them that he wanted to marry their daughter. 44 year old Dilip Kumar had arrived riding on a mare. On the day of Nikah, Dilip Kumar wanted to go to Saira Banu’s house in a car decorated with flowers, but his brothers and elder sister Sakina convinced him to take the marriage procession riding on a mare. Usually it took only two minutes to reach Saira’s house from home, but that day there was a crowd of thousands of fans on the way. Due to this, the journey of two minutes was completed in about an hour. Dilip Kumar was riding the mare and in front Prithviraj Kapoor, Shashi Kapoor and Nasir (Dilip Kumar’s younger brother) were handling the mare. Raj Kapoor kept his old promise in marriage. There was a very deep friendship between Dilip Kumar and Raj Kapoor. Raj Kapoor had once jokingly said that the day Dilip Kumar gets married, he will come to his house on his knees. When Raj Kapoor arrived at Dilip Kumar’s wedding on October 11, the family reminded him of his old promise. Then, without any delay, Raj Kapoor started walking on his knees. Saira Banu had told on her 59th wedding anniversary that the preparations for the wedding were done in a very short time. He wrote that he can never forgive himself for the pain he caused to Saira and her broken trust. Despite this, Saira did not decide to end the relationship. Dilip Kumar accepted his mistake and asked for some time from Saira. He said that he wants to end his relationship with Asma legally. Asma and Dilip Kumar’s relationship ended in early 1983. Dilip Kumar had also told an important thing about Saira Banu’s pregnancy in his autobiography. He wrote that at that time the wrong thing was spread that Saira could not become a mother. Whereas the truth was something else. Pregnant Saira Banu had fallen in the bathroom. According to Dilip Kumar, Saira became pregnant in 1972, but when she was eight months pregnant, she fell in the bathroom due to high blood pressure problem. The doctors could not operate on time. Dilip Kumar was known for his serious and calm nature, but he used to do a lot of mischief with Saira. In 1967, during the shooting of the film Panhala, there was power failure at night. In such a situation, Dilip Kumar would quietly go out and throw small stones at the window. Hearing the sound of stones in a deserted environment, Saira and her staff started screaming in fear. Manoj Kumar was ready to close the film for Saira. Saira Banu’s health suddenly deteriorated during the shooting of the film ‘Purab Aur Paschim’. He suffered from ulcerative colitis and had to go to London for treatment. During this time, the film’s director and actor Manoj Kumar refused to replace Saira with any other actress. He said that he will wait for Saira to recover. If necessary, we will stop the film. Dilip Kumar was greatly impressed by this behavior of Manoj Kumar. Years later, when Manoj Kumar offered Dilip Kumar to work in ‘Kranti’, he said yes to the film without reading the entire screenplay.
