In the year 1955, the shooting of the film ‘Azad’ was going on in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu. Meanwhile, film producer S.S. Vasan introduced Dilip Kumar to a famous astrologer. The astrologer looked at Dilip Kumar’s face, read the lines on his hands and then prepared his horoscope. After this he made such a prediction, hearing which even Dilip Kumar himself was surprised. The astrologer said that Dilip Kumar will get married after the age of 40. His bride will be about half his age. Not only this, she will also be associated with films. The prophecy did not end here. The astrologer also said that the woman would also suffer from a serious illness. Hearing this, Dilip Kumar had said, “I will never marry a film girl.” At that time, Dilip Kumar did not take this prediction seriously, but after about 11 years, almost everything said by the astrologer came true. In 1966, 44 year old Dilip Kumar married 22 year old actress Saira Banu. Today, on Saira Banu’s 82nd birthday, let us know some unheard stories of her life and her love story with Dilip Kumar. Saira Banu, who started learning Urdu due to Dilip Kumar, was born in 1944 to famous actress Naseem Bano and producer Mian Ehsaan-ul-Haq. Interestingly, the year Saira came into the world, Dilip Kumar’s first film Jwar Bhata (1944) was released. Saira was about 6 years old when she was sent to the United Kingdom for studies. He studied at the famous elite school Queen’s House in London. Whenever there were holidays, Saira used to come to India. During one such holiday, 12 year old Saira was watching the movie Aan at home with her mother. The film was made by Mehboob Khan and the hero was Dilip Kumar. Dilip Sahab’s acting had such an impact on Saira’s heart that as soon as the film ended, she expressed her wish to her mother. Saira clearly said – If she will marry, then only with Dilip Kumar. Even while studying in London, Saira Banu had only one dream in her heart – one day she would become Mrs. Dilip Kumar. Saira had told this in an old interview given to Dainik Bhaskar. Saira’s mother Naseem Bano used to tell her that if she wanted to become Dilip Kumar’s wife, then first she would have to understand his likes, dislikes and hobbies. What happened next, Saira also started learning the things of Dilip Sahab’s choice. When she came to know that Dilip Kumar was very fond of Urdu and poetry, Saira started studying Urdu regularly from Maulvi Sahib. Not only this, Dilip Sahab liked sitar, so Saira also tried to learn sitar. Dilip Kumar showed his gray hair for work. Saira’s mother Naseem was an actress, hence Dilip Kumar used to meet Naseem Bano. He also knew about Saira. When Saira decided to enter the film industry and producer S. When Mukherjee told this to Dilip Kumar, he said that Saira should be stopped from making a career in films. In the early 1960s, the casting of the film ‘Dil Diya Dard Liya’ was about to begin. Meanwhile, producer S. Mukherjee had told Dilip Kumar, “Yusuf, this girl is crazy to work with you.” On which Dilip Kumar stroked his white and black hair and said to Saira, “Have you seen these white hairs of mine? I am much older than you and I eat like a pig!” Saira started crying after hearing Shammi Kapoor’s scolding. Saira Banu’s first film was ‘Junglee’ released in 1961. However, the decision to enter films was not at all easy for him. The family, especially her mother Naseem Bano, was against it, but Saira did not agree to give up her dream. He started shooting for ‘Junglee’ during school holidays. After shooting for a few months, she went back to London and started completing her studies. But from the shooting of the film till its release, some such incidents happened which made Saira cry. Actually, Saira Banu had signed the film ‘Junglee’, but she had no acting experience. She reached Shalimar Bagh in Kashmir on the first day of shooting. Thousands of people had gathered there to watch the shooting. Saira was anyway quite shy. She had to lip-sync a line from the song ‘Kashmir Ki Kali’, but she was making mistakes again and again. If you paid attention to lip-sync, you would have turned in the wrong direction. If you had paid attention to walking, you would have missed the line of the song. After several retakes, Shammi Kapoor scolded him and said that if work has to be done, then do it properly. Hearing this, Saira became very embarrassed and started crying. Her sister also said that there is still time, if you want you can leave acting and go back, but Saira did not give up. He did the same scene again and this time he did it absolutely right. But before the release, another incident troubled Saira. One day she had gone to a shop in Mumbai with her mother. There was a salesman who was a big fan of Dilip Kumar. She asked Saira’s mother when her daughter’s film was coming? Mother told that next month. On hearing this, the salesman said that Dilip Kumar’s ‘Ganga Jamuna’ is also being released next month. If both the films come together, then who will watch Saira’s film? Hearing this, Saira got scared and started crying right there. He thought that his film would flop. But exactly the opposite happened. ‘Junglee’ and ‘Ganga Jamuna’ were released with a gap of a week and both the films achieved great success. For the first time in the party, Dilip Kumar noticed the girl with whom Dilip Kumar had avoided working for years, one evening his perspective changed forever after seeing the same girl. The day was today i.e. 23rd August, but the year was 1966. It was the occasion of Saira Banu’s birthday and her mother Naseem Banu had also organized a house warming party of her new bungalow. At that time Saira was shooting for the film ‘Pyaar Mohabbat’. When she reached the party after finishing the shooting, many big stars of the film industry were present there. Meanwhile, Saira’s eyes fell on Dilip Kumar. Naseem Bano had specially invited him to the party. Dilip Sahab had reached Mumbai by flight from Madras to attend Saira’s birthday. Dilip Kumar has mentioned this evening in his autobiography. He had told that Saira was looking very beautiful in saree that day. Seeing her, for the first time Dilip Sahab realized that whom he had considered a little girl till now, she has now become a beautiful and confident young woman. Both of them shook hands. This was the moment when a new feeling about Saira arose in Dilip Kumar’s heart. The party ended and Dilip Sahab returned to Madras, but now Saira was not coming out of his mind. In this way the closeness between the two started increasing. The romance lasted for eight days, then she directly asked for her mother’s hand. For Saira Banu, it was no less than a film story. Dilip Kumar, whom she had loved since childhood, had now come close to her life. While talking to Dainik Bhaskar, Saira had told that Dilip Kumar used to come to Mumbai from Madras. He would have dinner at Saira’s house and then leave for his shooting. This series of meetings between the two continued for about eight days. Then one day Dilip Kumar took a step which Saira had probably never imagined. He went to their mother and grandmother and told them that he wanted to marry their daughter. 44 year old Dilip Kumar had arrived riding on a mare. On the day of Nikah, Dilip Kumar wanted to go to Saira Banu’s house in a car decorated with flowers, but his brothers and elder sister Sakina convinced him to take the marriage procession riding on a mare. Usually it took only two minutes to reach Saira’s house from home, but that day there was a crowd of thousands of fans on the way. Due to this, the journey of two minutes was completed in about an hour. Dilip Kumar was riding the mare and in front Prithviraj Kapoor, Shashi Kapoor and Nasir (Dilip Kumar’s younger brother) were handling the mare. Raj Kapoor kept his old promise in marriage. There was a very deep friendship between Dilip Kumar and Raj Kapoor. Raj Kapoor had once jokingly said that the day Dilip Kumar gets married, he will come to his house on his knees. When Raj Kapoor arrived at Dilip Kumar’s wedding on October 11, the family reminded him of his old promise. Then, without any delay, Raj Kapoor started walking on his knees. Seeing this, an atmosphere of laughter and happiness was created among the guests present there. Saira Banu had told on her 59th wedding anniversary that the preparations for the wedding were done in a very short time. Her wedding dress was not stitched by any big designer, but by a local tailor. Even the wedding cards were not printed. There was so much crowd of guests at the wedding that even the food was in short supply. The situation was such that some people even took small things from the wedding with them as souvenirs. Someone was picking up a spoon, while someone was keeping a fork in his pocket. Read the news of Dilip’s second marriage in the newspaper. It had been 16 years since Dilip Kumar and Saira Banu were married. Then in 1982, there came a turning point in their life, which shook the foundation of this relationship. Saira read in a newspaper (tabloid) that Dilip Kumar had married a woman named Asma Rehman from Hyderabad. Asma was a friend of Dilip Kumar’s sisters. When Dilip Kumar met her, she was the mother of three children. This news was no less than a shock for Saira. Dilip Kumar later described this relationship in his autobiography as the ‘serious mistake’ of his life. He wrote that he can never forgive himself for the pain he caused to Saira and her broken trust. Despite this, Saira did not decide to end the relationship. Dilip Kumar accepted his mistake and asked for some time from Saira. He said that he wants to end his relationship with Asma legally. Asma and Dilip Kumar’s relationship ended in early 1983. Dilip Kumar had also told an important thing about Saira Banu’s pregnancy in his autobiography. He wrote that at that time the wrong thing was spread that Saira could not become a mother. Whereas the truth was something else. Pregnant Saira Banu had fallen in the bathroom. According to Dilip Kumar, Saira became pregnant in 1972, but when she was eight months pregnant, she fell in the bathroom due to high blood pressure problem. The doctors could not operate on time. Meanwhile, the child could not be saved because it got stuck in the umbilical cord. Later they came to know that their unborn child was a son. This accident was very painful for both of them. After this Saira did not try to have a child again. He accepted it as God’s will. Surprised Saira by taking her to Buckingham Palace: One day in London, Saira told Dilip Kumar that she wished she could go to Buckingham Palace and meet the Queen. Coincidentally, in the same week, Dilip Kumar had received an invitation to a tea party from the Queen. He did not tell Saira anything and prepared her and took her to Buckingham Palace in Rolls Royce. When the carriage reached the palace gate, Saira came to know that she was really going to meet Queen Elizabeth. Dilip Kumar used to throw stones to scare Saira. Dilip Kumar was known for his serious and calm nature, but he used to do a lot of mischief with Saira. In 1967, during the shooting of the film Panhala, there was power failure at night. In such a situation, Dilip Kumar would quietly go out and throw small stones at the window. Hearing the sound of stones in a deserted environment, Saira and her staff started screaming in fear. Manoj Kumar was ready to close the film for Saira. Saira Banu’s health suddenly deteriorated during the shooting of the film ‘Purab Aur Paschim’. He suffered from ulcerative colitis and had to go to London for treatment. During this time, the film’s director and actor Manoj Kumar refused to replace Saira with any other actress. He said that he will wait for Saira to recover. If necessary, we will stop the film. Dilip Kumar was greatly impressed by this behavior of Manoj Kumar. Years later, when Manoj Kumar offered Dilip Kumar to work in ‘Kranti’, he said yes to the film without reading the entire screenplay. Dilip Kumar had called it a recognition of Manoj Kumar’s old favor. Saira says- If he had a son, he would have been like Shahrukh. Dilip Kumar died on 7 July 2021. With this, their marriage of almost 55 years ended, but for Saira, Dilip Sahab is still the most important part of her life. Saira Banu often shares her pictures and memories related to her on social media. The relationship between Saira Banu and actor Shahrukh Khan is very special and like that of mother and son. Saira and her late husband Dilip Kumar always treated Shahrukh as their close-spoken son. Saira said on many occasions that when she saw Shahrukh for the first time, she saw a glimpse of Dilip Kumar in him. She has often said that if she and Dilip Sahab had a son, he would have been like Shahrukh. After the demise of Dilip Kumar, Shahrukh immediately went to meet Saira Banu and consoled her. ………..
